PAOE PIT MEDFORD MATT, TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON, THURSDAY, JUNE 6. 1940. SPORTS LESNEVICH LOSES GETTITLEANYWAY Detroit. June 6 (T) Cut Lesnevich, a plodding pugilist from Cliffslde Park. N. J., lost hit chance to win the light heavyweight boxing champion hip of the world last night but he woke up today with the knowledge that the title will probably be his within a few days. Billy Conn, the champion re built the blasted hopes of Lesne vich a few minutes after receiv lug the decision in a 13-round defense of his crown. Lesnevich was in a shower cooling his tired body when Conn walked in. "It was a nice fight, Billy,' said Gus. "I have no alibi." "Don't feel bad," answered Conn, "because the champion ship will be yours in a few days This fight convinced me I can't take off weight any more and from now on I'm a heavyweight You can beat the other light heavies." Conn, a notoriously slow starter, appeared to disadvan tage In the early rounds and then closed in whirlwind style. Hutcheson. southpaw, and Bob Wiltshire are expected to pitch for the fourth-place Athletics. The Craters, deadlocked with Albany for the league leader ship, will present the same line up as that which trimmed Bend in a two-game series here last week-end. A career we would pass up without regret, had we the choice of becoming an active participant in any known field of professional sport, is that of wheeling one of those fire-spitting, speed-burning midget auto racers around a quarter-mile terra firma oval. In our humble opinion, there are more healthful ways to make a living. Like pro football or ice hockey, or even looking Joseph Louis in the eye inside a hemp enclosure. We would gladly accept any one of those three alternatives rather than strap ourselves in what the trade terms a "doodle-bug" and go whirling at some 70 miles an hour around a track that isn't banked on the bends, and with othei "doodle bugs" buzz ing like mad hornets to the right and left of you, also to the front and rear. football, ice hockey, lacrosse and boxing, are generally con sidered "dangerous" sports, and we don't deny it in the least. But from the casualty lists com ing to light of late it looks rather like the above mention ed endeavors are more or less tame compared to the business of herding midget gas-buggies toward the checkered banner. In the last races held here, on May 14, Rastus Greene, the cullud pilot from the deep south, busted through that nice green fence at the new fair grounds baseball park and wound up in the hospital with his jaw, teeth and face bashed all out of shape. That same week Bruce Day of L. A. snap ped four ribs in a grandstand crackup at Klamath Falls, and spent several days in a hospital. swing around a circuit which includes towns in Washington and Idaho besides a couple in northeastern Oregon.
