SENATORIAL GARB I rrrrmve im . i sum Asniana store 10 7- 14, 23. 27 Sartorial Splendor Thing of Past, Lawmakers Now Look Like Ordinary Men By Jack Slinnalt Washington The visitor to ' WashinRton frequently returns home nowadays feeling that the senate was a disappointing fea ture of his sight-seeing tour. tie saw the senate in session. It was something of a letdown, particularly after such impres sive spectacles as the black- robed justices or the supreme court in their marble temple. and the Lincoln memorial with its life-like statue. Not that Visitor Jones thinks the senators failed to comport themselves as members of "the greatest deliberative body In the world." It's Just that they don't look so great. To Jones they look Just about the same as the fellows in the Rotary club. And Jones recalls reading in his boyhood of "the frock-coated gladiators of the na tional political arena." In those days the early 1900's most of the senators wore Prince Alberts and beards. Newspaper correspondents wore silk hats and frock coats to the opening session. Thar Were The Daya Long before the late James "Ham" Lewis was recognized as the senate's undisputed Sul tnn of Sartorla, there were Beau Brummels like Montana's Wil liam A. Clark, "copper king" and ex-Indian fighter, immacu late in one-button cutaway and striped trousers, and Mississip pi's James K. Vardaman, mag nificent in a white flannel suit and white hat contrasting with his coal black hair. There was Jeff Davis of Ar kansas, known as the sartorial Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde of the senate. In Washington he wore the conventional frock coat, but by the time he reached his hills he had on scuffed boots, a frayed straw hat and patched pants. Massachusetts' blue-blooded Henry Cabot Lodge, with a perfectly-trimmed Van Dyke and frock coat, and South Carolina s "Pitchfork Ben" Tillman, in a lonx blnck alpaca coat majesti cally swinging a palm-leaf fan, used to be sights. In the late twenties, Senator Lee Overman of North Carolina wore a black cape with velvet collars and red satin lining. And big Tom Hoflin of Alabama em bellished Capital Hill with a voluminous black coat, cream colored vest, grey trousers and broad-brimmed black hat. The arrival of summer In Washington then was heralded by Heflin's cream-colored pon gee suit. Even Louisiana Huey Long came to the capital with new morning coat. ' Only Few Left The sennte now boasts a score or more of snappy dressers but only along conventional, business linrs. Tom Connally of Texas, occasionally dons a frock coat, and Mathew Neely of West Virginia gives color to the sen ate scene with suits of plaid and green but there is nothing today to compare with the style of the plnk-mid-white whiskered "Ham" Lewis of Illinois. Gone too is Borah of Idaho, probably the Inst of the old Ro mans. Borah wasn't a fancy drener but with his leonine head and great mane of hair he was the perfect picture of the old time gladiator. At first several members of the association wanltd to confine the books to Marxist lird radical material, but this sugcftion was defeated. Most of Zioncheck's friends believe he would have become a mod erate liberal had he lived longer. The memorial library Is not senrrgated but is scattered among other volumes on the library shelves. The 1.100 books and 320 pamphlets carry a sticker Inside the covers bear ing the association's stamp and Zioncheck's suicide note.
