MEDFORD. OREGON. WEDNESDAY, MAY 22. 1940. Portland, May 22. m Old age assistance rolls, closed Nov ember when a $1,300,000 deficit was faced, probably will not be reopened this year, the state public welfare commission Indi cated today. Applicants for old-age assis tance will continue to be cared for by general assistance grants. Chairman J. H. Luihn said. Luihn added that Oregon liquor control commission rev enues will be higher than es timated, with the possibility that the anticipated $1,300,000 deficit will be considerably reduced. A sub-committee will meet in June with the county Judges I association which asked that new old-age assistance appli-! cants be accepted. I ' Must Stay in Bounds I "The revenue deficit faced by ! the state has made it necessary j for the welfare commission to stay within funds allocated by the legislature, as well as within funds available, without disturb ing the 21,000 persons over 65 who were then on the rolls," Luihn said in a statement in dorsed by commission resolu tion. The commission refused to sign an agreement with the fed eral surplus commodities corpo ration .'or distribution of com modities, but authorized Admin istrator Elmer Goudy to confer with Richard R. Brown., FSCC representative, in Chicago this week. The FSCC Informed the com mission by telegram that unless the contract was signed or some action taken, the shipment and allocation of commodities to Oregon would stop. Supply On Hand Luihn explained that there Is "quite a substantial supply" on hand and that a halt in ship ment would not result in any hardships. Goudy explained that the con tract offered by the FSCC con flicted in many ways with state law. The following was allocated from state funds for public as sistance programs for the quar ter ending September 30: Old age assistance $445,152, blind assistance $14,131, aid to de pendent children $115,150. The June general assistance budget for counties totaled $300,416 and the commission ap proved the payment of $176,206 as its s h a r e. The counties' share amounts to $124,208.
