MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD, OREGON. FRIDAY. JANUARY 12. 1940. PAGE SEVEN Palo Alto, Cal., Jan. 12. (JP) Alumni had both praise and criticism today for the selection of Clark D. Shaughnessy, Uni versity of Chicago's teamless football coach, to succeed Claude E. "Tiny" ThornhtU at Stanford university. Another group of graduates, many of whom protested loudly the work of Thornhlll, who was dismissed recently after the poorest Stanford season In years, preferred to reserve com ment until Shaughnessy had a chance to show what he could do with the forlorn football sit uation here. Approval of Shaughnessy's se lection came from such alumni as Leland Cutler, president of the university trustees: Judge L. R. Weinmann, board of ath letic control member and Har low Rothert, president of the block "S society. On the other side of the fence, Eugene J. Korn, president of the San Francisco board of trade, (aid he was disappointed be cause Dud De Groot, San Jose State coach and former Stan forditc, was r Jt selected. J. Derroll Chace, oil company executive and formef track star, said: "Why Stanford should go so far afield to get a comparative "unknown' when two of the best coaches in America, De Groot and Lawrence Shaw of Santa Clara, were available, is beyond us." Gardner, in his day, was one of the nation's most glamorous bandits, but the glamor wore off. It sounds like preaching to say so, but glamor of that sort AL WAYS wears off. 115IKHAEL M. KAGANOVICH, soviet commissar for avia tion, is relieved of his duties, the papers tell us and "trans ferred to another post." (The post to which he has been transferred, doubtless, is the one referred to by the ancient Teu tonic tribes as Valhalla, which the Soviets, being godless, do not recognize.) pOPENHAGEN dispatches quote reports that more than 100 Russian officers have been called back from the Finnish front, some of them to face trial before special courts consisting of people's commissars. Their crime is that THEY FAILED. These Copenhagen. (Denmark) dispatches add that the commis sariat dealing with supplies is especially under Stalin's fire, with many reported executions. RECOMMENDED to Stalin's at tention: Persia, driving vast hordes of semi-slave troops into battle under the whip, FAILED CON SPICUOUSLY to conquer the free Greeks who were fighting for their homes and their lib erties. TPHE Germans say eight British vessels were sunk in Tues day's naval blitzkrieg in the North Sea and adjacent waters. The British say it was only two. In Wednesday's air fight over the German fortified Island of Sylt, the British say two enemy planes were downed with a loss of only one of their own. The Germans, going them consider ably better, say three British planes were shot down and one crippled with NO GERMAN LOSSES. . (Americans, shrugging their shoulders cynically as they read, say "Phooey on both of you!") QUESTION: Do the British and the German censors really be lieve they are fooling each other, or are they merely trying to fool the people at home? Use Mall Tribune want ads. AT THE National Capitol WITH John W. Kelly (Continued from Para One.) he found three adults, two chil dren and a couple of dogs. He asked where they were from and they replied: "the Willam ette Valley", and Holman snap ped back they were then In the heart of the Willamette valley. Management officials explained they thought the tenants were migrants from California not from over Salem way, where the baby was born. In a corner Holman saw four shotguns which, with the dogs, come in handy for a little hunt ing. The senator thinks that no person on relief, drawing sub sistence from the federal gov ernment, should be permitted to have lethal weapons. Data promised the senator on the cost, operation, maintenance, population, have not been sup plied. He wants to know how much the migratory camp con tributes toward education. LIE is not hard-hearted and realizes aid must be fur nished the needy, says the Junior Oregon senator, but there have been too many millions wasted and the time has come to apply the brakes In spending. Some things can be dispensed with and the republic still Burvlve. which goes to the Paclflo coast. Doris Duks (roll your own), richest girl In America, slmoat stols the show from Mr. Roosevelt, as ereryons had eyes on her. She was smothered with bracelets, earrings, necklaces, all of gold that has escaped the government cache In Kentucky. The Duke wealth enabled her husband to be appointed minis ter to Ontario. It was noticeable that the Democrats were fatter than when they attended the first Jackson Day dinner to raise funds for the party. Public troughlng haa not starved any of them. SEVERE COLD BIGS HEAVY PURCHASE OF WARMER DUDS, SKATtS New York, Jan. 12. MP) Retail merchants' supplies of winter clothes were all but cleaned out this week as cold I and snow kept America shiver ing, Dun & Bradstreet said to day in a weekly survey. Buying was especially large, the review said, tn suburban areas. At the same time, busi ness In some rural sections was virtually at a standstill due to weather conditions discouraging travel to shopping centers. Average gain in volume over last year for all retailers was estimated by the agency at 7 to 13 per cent. "Stores In some cities re ported stocks of tee skates and sporting apparel virtually ex hausted . Clothing pro motions were scoring excep tional gains over last year, despite the generally smaller markdowns in effect," the re view declared. "Travel and resort wear shops reported gains In salv volume of S to 10 per cent, the sharp decline in cruise) wear notwithstanding." o CAUSE of delay In the president sending the nomination of Sena tor Lewis B. Schwellenboch for fed eral district Judge In Washington state was the argument between the White Hcnise and the senator. With Indiana's Mint on, Schwellenbach was one of the two principal defenders of the faith on the senate floor; they have been 100 percent, plus. Each has hoped for reward by appointment on the supreme court, but Mr. Roose velt has passed them up. By the rules of the game, Schwel lenbach Is entitled to the district Judge Job. Political conditions In Washington are confusing this year and Schwellenbach la not certain that he could be re-elected; also his relations with, the senior senator. Homer T. Bone, are not pleasant. The White Hou?, In no position to refuse the appointment, haa argued with Schwellenbach. to continue in the senate, telling him his re-election Is a cinch. Intimates of the Washington sena tor say Schwellenbach Is tired of politics and wants to retire to a more quiet life on the bench. UNDER the 1939 agricultural pro gram of Triple A, It Is estimated that 31,000 farmers In Oregon will be paid 94,121,000. Estimate for farm ers In Washington cooperating with the plan Is $4,953,000.'
