Father Dies Word was re ceived here by telegram yester day of the death of Sam Stil well In his home at Mount Grove, Mo., Wednesday night. Mr. Stilwell was the father of Mrs. R. D. McCarty of Orchard Home Drive. He was 84 years old. Theft Reported Chester Bal derston of Thompson creek re ported to state police today that 23 windows were stolen during the past month from two houses he owns in the Thompson creek district. Mr. Balderston had been staying In Medford during the period the alleged thefts occurred, police said. . . Permits First two building permits of 1940 were on the books at city hall today. L. Hoer- ner, who was en route from Oakland, Cal., to Seattle, Wash., in a U. S. navy Curtiss scout observation plane. His station is on the aircraft carrier Saratoga. Lieut. Dale Swartz of the Wash ington national guard, left this morning in his Douglas obser vation plane for Klamath Falls. He arrived here yesterday ait ernoon from his station at Sp kane. Lieut. Jan- ouch, supervisor of Rogue River national forest, transacted offi cial business today in Grants Pass. Record Set Medford recruit ing station contributed 26 re cruits to the U. S. army in 1939 and assisted the Portland dis trict to establish a new record of 1712 enlistments, a press re release today revealed. The Portland district embraces Ore gon and parts of Washington and Idaho. The district also es tablished a new monthly record in December with 231 enlist ments, 15 more than in March, 1936, previous high month. SENATE G.O.P. Oppose New Taxes "There appeared to be almost unanimous opposition to any plan for further taxation at this session of congress," McNary told reporters. "We thought that it was unnecessary. We thought that retrenchment could be had spH government expen ditures for the normal activities of regular government agencies. "In my opinion," McNary told reporters before the meeting, "super-appropriations for nation al defense should await the re sult of experimentation in the wars now being waged through out the world. "I don't believe that the nor mal activities of government should be crippled to provide funds for an unnecessarily large national defense program, but I do believe that departmental expenditures should be substan tially reduced." Day of Evangelism Scheduled Sunday in Nazarene Church The Church of the Nazarene, Holly and First, will have a special day of Evangelism, Sun day, with Rev. J. E. Kiemel, evangelist. Rev. Kiemel has re cently conducted successful cam paigns in Iowa, Kansas, Colo rado and Oregon. Beginning Sunday, Jan. 14th, the Church of the Nazarene will open an extended revival cam' paign with the Rev. C. E. Rob erts, of Pasadena, California, evangelist, and Mrs. A. J. Schocke, of Roseburg, musical director and soloist. The public Is Invited to hear these gifted Christian workers.
