Attorney Gus Newbury visited the Mail Tribune today and exhibited some extremely interesting "Americana" which he has preserved lor his early-day scrap-book. First: the Saturday and Sun day Oregonian for September 14 and 15, 1901, containing the account ol President McKinley's death at Buffalo, N. Y., the day before, as a result of two pistol shot wounds inflicted the week before by the anarchist assassin, Leon Czolgosz. Second: two national Repub lican ballots, used in 1872 when General Grant was. the candi date, and In 1888 when the can didate was Benjamin Harrison Both the Oregonian and the bal lots are in the most extraordin ary state of preservation white and clean looking as though they had all Just come off the press. The Republican tickets were the type used before the intro duction of the Australian ballot. when each party distributed the ballots on which the names of the candidates were printed, and the voter decided which one he wished to vote for, by placing that one in the ballot box. No marking or identification what ever was necessary, but the voter could cross out any elec tor's named desired and write In another name if he wished. Obviously a system that invited corruption and stuffing of the ballot box. The copies of the Oregonian are full of Interest. Harvey Scott was then editor, and his characted analysis of Teddy Roosevelt, McKinley's successor, was a masterpiece of keen ap praisal and understanding. Al though in that same issue the former vice-president declared he would carry out the policies of his predecessor, Editor Scott predicted he wouldn't and Edi tor Scott was right. Another interesting feature, particularly to the advertising department of any newspaper Is a large display ad one of the largest In the paper of the "Copeland Medical Institute," or "The Dekum, Third and Wash ington," Portland. The insti tute guaranteed to cure "all dis eases for a flat sum of $5 per month." The ad contains a long list of personal testimonials, great emphasis being placed up on the marvelous results in cur ing the most dreaded ailment of that period, "consumption." Those who have thought social ized medicine a new departure, will see in this small charge per month, an important feature of a very modern school of thought. There is hardly a dally newspaper In the country today that would handle a medical ad of this description, but at the turn of the century the prac tice was quite common. Another striking feature of the old Oregonian are the small beads, the even smaller type, and the terrible illustrations, some of them little more than Inky smears In marked con trast with the same newspaper ioaay. FROM U. S. IRISH TERRORISTS IS CLAIM IN PARLIAMENT Dublin, Jan. 4. VP) A charge that the outlawed Irish Republican Army was financed with money from the United States was made in Parliament today as legislators met in spec ial session to draft drastic laws to combat any menace to public safety. Justice Minister Gerald Bo- land, describing a raid on the Phoenix Park arsenal Dec. 23 when huge quantities of ammu nition were stolen, declared the Irish government was sure large sums of money had come from America to finance the IRA ex tremists. Government agents have cap tured packages of American cur rency, he told parliament which met under heavy guard amid rumors of an Impending rebel lion. Boland said persons connected with the illegal organization had large sums of money, arms and explosives" and were engaged in hostile activities. HUSBAND SLAYS Tacoma, Wasn., Jan. 4. In what De tective Captain Cliff Osborne said was "murder and attempted suicide." Mrs. Nickle died late last night from loss of blood caused wnen ner jugular vein was slashed. The couple's daughter Loeila, 14, suffered neck and facial cuts when she attempted to protect her mother, Osborne reported. Nickle, the detective captain said, went to the home of his estranged wife last night and after visiting briefly announced: "If I can't live here, I'll never leave this house alive." F, y Washington, Jan. 4. (P) The federal communications commission recomended today consolidation of telegraph com panies as "an obvious remedy for many of the existing ills" of the industry. The firms affected are the Western Union Telegraph com pany and the Postal Telegraph and Cable corporation. Reports of proposals for merging the two companies have been heard for several years, and the sen ate last night directed the FCC to survey the situation. Western Union has nearly 20,000 offices and Postal nearly 4,400. On last June 30, Western Union had 43,490 employes and Postal (land lines) 14,500. The commission suggested congress remove the present prohibition against consolida tion, In a report sent to Chair man Wheeler (D.-Mont.) of the senate interstate commerce com mittee. (JPl A Brit ish warplane, pursued by two German Messerschmitts over German territory Wednesday, fell In flames in Belgium, kill ing one flier and injuring two others seriously. The plane fell about six miles from the Ger man city of Aix-La-Chapelle. Salvation Army. London, Jan. 4. W) Salva tion Army headquarters said today that one sister was killed and three were injured seriously in a Russian air raid, which damaged the army's canteen at Vassa, central Finland. One of the world's greatest copper deposits is located in Africa, in Cape province, North ern Transvaal and on the north ern Rhodesia-Belgian Congo border. STRICKEN CONGRESSMAN SUCCUMBS IN CAPITOL . S. Naval Reserve force, U. S. army, Czechoslovak army, French army and Imperial Russian army. While a staff officer to Admiral Kolchak at Omsk. Siberia, 1918-19, Thurn-Taxis was among the first to enter the house in Ekaterinburg where Czar Nicholas II and his family were executed. It is possible the Grand Duchess Anastasia escaped." W) A new earthquake was reported today to have leveled 10 villages In the Yozgad area, adding to Tur key's quake damage of Inst week as the River Euphrates broke Its banks, spreading ter ror in the region of southern Anatolia. The Yozgad region, scene of widespread suffering from pre vious tremors, was thrown Into a panic by the latest shocks. Hundreds of buildings collapsed. Nearly a thousand persons were made homeless. SWEDISH SHIP SUNK OFF SCOTTISH COAST London. Jan. 4. (IP) The Swedish steamer Svarton, 2.47S tons, was reported torpedoed to day by a submarine off the northeast coast of Scotland and sunk in a minute and a half. Twenty members of her crew were missing. Eleven survivors on a raft were rescued by a lifeboat. Food Stamp Plan Gets Good Start Portland, Jan. 4. (P) More than 1,000 persons took advan tage of the government's food stamp plan yesterday to pro vide general assistance and re duce surplus commodities. The program will continue In definitely.
