E NEARLY MILLION CLOSE IN ON REDS AT SOVIET LINE Murmansk Railway Cut at Several Places is Report; Planes Aid in Attacks. TINGED WITH Subversive Activities De clining Rapidly in U. S. Is Committee's Report. PAGE TEN TIE Washington, Jan. 4. (P) The Dies committee estimated today that no more than 1,000, 000 Americans have been ser iously affected by subversive activities, which it said were decllningapidly because of the international situation. "The time may speedily come when they will cease to be ser iously regarded by anyone in the United States," the commit tee said in reporting to the house on its two-year investiga tion of ton-American activities. Summary Given In a 15,000-word summary of its hearings, signed by all seven members after a stormy meet ing, the committee drew these major conclusions: 1. The overwhelming major ity of CIO members, including President John L. Lewis, are not communists or communist sympathizers, but the leadership of a quarter of the CIO unions Is "more than tinged with com munism." 2. It omitted from a list of "communist front" organiza tions the American Youth Con gress, which Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt had upheld. The youth congress has been de scribed as a "front" group by witnesses before the committee. 3. The Soviet-Nazi pact hits helped protect constitutional de mocracy by "making more clear the real nature of all dic tatorships" and by revealing the similarity between Hitler's nazi ism and Stalin's communism. 4. Both the German-American bund and the communist party in the United States are agents of foreign power and should be controlled. 5. The communist advocacy of changing the United States government violates the 1933 treaty by which the United States recognized Russia. 6. There is a "remote possi bility" that communists, nozis or fascists might overthrow the nation's constitutional govern ment, but a "greater chance" exists that opponents of one form of violence may accept another type they find less ob jectionable. 7. Elimination of. subversive activities depends on earnest ef forts of all groups and on strict law enforcement. 8. The committee, which ex pires tonight, should bo contin ued to make certain that the "confusion" among subversive organizations "is turned into complete rout." Lewis Exonerated Two principal disputes arose In the committee yesterday when it was studying the final draft of the report. A special vote had to be taken before the members agreed to include John L. Lewis in the statement exonerating the bulk of CIO members from being communist sympathizers. Representative Dempsey (D., N.M.), moved the committee make public the names of any federal employes it could prove were communists. He and four other committeemen said they knew of none. The sixth nnmed only one person in the WPA, and the matter was dropped. Those who signed the report in person were Representatives Dempsey, Stares (D., Ala), Casey (D., Mass.), Voorhis (D., Cel.), Thomas (R., N. J.), and Mason (Ft., 111.). The name of Chairman Dies (D., Tex ), who Is ill at Orange, Texas, was af fixed by a clerk. Switched To CIO The report asserted that com munists early attempted to gain( a foothold in the American Fed eration of Labor, then switched to the CIO. "It is unmistakably clear." the committee said, "that the overwhelming majority of the members of the CIO as well as its president, are not com munists or communist sympa thizers, but sincere American workers seeking to improve their lot in life in perfectly leg itimate American fashion. "The evidence before the eommitteo indicates, however, that the leadership of some 10 or 12 of the (CIO) unions out of a total of 48 is more than tinged with communism. , . . There is encouraging evidence of an attempt on the part of the CIO leadership to remove this communist influence." By Themis F. Hawkins. With the Finnish Forces on the Lake Kianta front. Jan. 4. UP) A Finnish division on this northern from has estab lished nositions within five miles of the Russian border, while 1 before and behind ski patrols glide along wide semi-circles to close in on the fleeing enemy. The ski troops, which played a major role in dispersing the Russian 163rd division at Lake Kianta, killing thousands and capturing hundreds, penetrated Soviet territory at a number of points. Railroad Cut. The Finnish patrols were said in a highly reliable quarter to have cut the Murmansk railway not once but several times. These patrols coordinated their attacks with Finnish aerial operations further south. Finns established positions yesterday in the Lake ,Kokki sector, which meant they had advanced against no effective resistance for about 12 miles, ski patrols, but in smaller num ski patrols, btu In smaller num bers. Mostly they are kept to the Soviet side and try to catch the elusive white-garbed Finnish detachments. Attack Crushed. Russian hopes for a decisive blow against Finnish land de fenses were believed today to have been crushed for the win ter by the rout of the Red army's 163rd division. Losers in the greatest single battle of the war, 2,000 rem nants of the division of 17,000 men, wandering hungry and half-frozen in thick Finnish fir forests, were easy picking for the hardy defenders, lumber jacks who are at home In the snowy woods. SOLDERS SAIL FOR CALIFORNIA 'ATTACK' Tacoma, Wash., Jan. 4. (U.R) World war scenes lived again today as the U. S. army trans port Republic sailed with the first of 10,000 soldiers for the biggest peace-time maneuvers involving a Joint army-navy "attack" on the California coast. The Republic took aboard 1,500 officers and men of the third "Rock of the Marne" di vision, machine guns, 75 mm. howitzers, heavy trucks and reconnaissance cars.
