SOCIETY AND CLUB NEWS OF THE WEEK By CLARA HASY DAVIS Berkeley Chapel Scene of Wedding Wednesday Noon A wedding of interest to many r.ogue valley friends is that of Miss Pearl Elaine Fawcett and Or. Robert William Sleeter vhieh was solemnized at noon v'ednesday, December 27 in the little Chapel of the Flowers in lerkeley, Cal. Numerous rela tes of both the bride and bridegroom were present at the .eremony and also at the lunch con which followed at the Du rant Hotel in Berkeley. Miss Fawcett is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Fawcett, well known residents of Vallejo. After graduating from the Val lejo schools she attended the University of California in -Berkeley, where she was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega soror ity, and president In her senior year. Following her graduation she completed the curriculum in so cial service, and for the past two and a half years has been em ployed in the Sacramento Coun ty hospital. She is the sister of Miss Helen Fawcett, teacher in the Vallejo school department. Dr. Sleeter Is the son of Mrs. Ralston W. Sleeter and the late Dr. Sleeter of Medford. He is a graduate of the University of Oregon at Eugene and the Ore gon Medical school at Portland, After interning at the Sacra mento county hospital, he took a year of graduate work at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, and is now prac ticing in this city. For her wedding ensemble the bride chose a beige suit trimmed in brown squirrel, with accessories to match. She wore a corsage of orchids. Walter Fawcett gave his daughter in marriage. Her only attendant was her sister, who was dressed in blue crepe, with brown accessories. Her corsage was of pink cycla men. Richard Sleeter served as his brother's best man. Mrs. Sleeter was gowned in black velvet, and Mrs. Fawcett, mother of the bride, wore a rust velvet dress. Both Mrs. Sleeter and Mrs. Fawcett wore corsages of gardenias. After the wedding ceremony a luncheon was enjoyed at the Durant hotel, where pink and white flowers decorated the table. A beautiful wedding coke, which was cut by the bride, was feature of the luncheon. Following their wedding trip the couple will establish their home in Medford. Vallejo relatives of the bride who attended the wedding and luncheon were Mr. and Mrs. Gil bert D. Foster, Mr. and Mrs. Mark F. Andrews and Miss Ade laide Grosshcrr. Miss Swem Studies In San Francisco The many friends of Miss Phoebe Swem. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Swem, will be Interested to know that she is spending a week in San Fran cisco where she Is receiving spe cial lessons on the accordion from Meni Retti, famed accor dion teacher. Miss Swem motored to the Bay City with Mr. and Mrs. Herman Purucker. They ex pect to return to Medford by Tuesday. The local miss is already re garded as an accomplished ac cordion player and following the lessons from Mr. Hetti, in which she is learning new tech nique, it is anticipnted that she will be even more adept on the instrument. Family Party at Rinabarger Home Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Rinabarger were hosts during the holidays for several affairs to which out-of-town guests were present. On Christmas day those pres ent at the RinnbBrger home were Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Coch ran of Grants Pass, Howard Bar rett and the hosts' daughter. Miss Frankle Rinabarger, both of Grants Pass, the Rinnbargcrs' son Roland of Oregon State col lege and his house guest Harold Hartzcll, University of Oregon student. Also a guest was Mrs. Nettie Norris of Husum, Wash., who will visit her son-in-law and daughter, the Rinnbargcrs until spring. Mrs. Norris is a former long time resident of Medford. Maddox Studio Party Enjoyed Friday afternoon an Informal Christmas party was held at the Maddox studio for all the Maddox's piano pupils under 12 years of age. Each pupil played a piano solo prepared for the occasion and a pleasant afternoon was spent playing games. Refreshments were served nt the conclusion of the party. Bell officiating. A breakfast for 16 guests will follow in the Pebble Beach lodge. The bride Is the daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. George M. Mr 8. Swartz Is Party Honor ee Mrs. William Swartz was hon ored Wednesday at her home on Berkeley Way when the Jolly Stitchers club entertained with a surprise pot-luck dinner In observance of her birthday. The afternoon was spent in playing pinochle, at which time a most unique card arrange ment occurred. One thousand aces were melded three times with the same dock of cards. The lucky players were Mrs. Harry Barnobiirg, her partner. Mrs. Swartz; Mrs. Frank Ovel man and her partner, Mrs. Ger den Stagg, and Mrs. Dan Con ner and her partner, Mrs. Ida Hollars. Eight persons were playing at two tables. Those present were Mcsdnmcs Gordon Stngg, Dan Conner, Harry Bameburg, Johnny Grin sted. Frank Ovelman, Robert West, Jnne Hemstrect, Ida Hol lars, and the honored guest, Mrs. Swartz. Mrs. Grinsted was elected president and Mrs. Ovelman re porter for the coming year. The next meeting will be held with Mrs. Ida Hollars. Thursday. January 11. Party Fetes Group Of U. of W. Coeds Miss Barbara Brayton was a recent hostess for a delightful luncheon party at her home on Vancouver avenue. Guests included Miss Pecev Anderson of Sacramento. Miss Charlotte Gllhan of San Jose, the Misses Joan Frennn and Betty Reardon of San Diego, Cal., Mary and Monaco Wilcox and Dixie Brown. The out-of-town guests were en route to Seattle from their respective homes In California. They are coeds at the Univer sity of Washington. Holiday Visitors At Sutherlands Among holiday visitors here were Mr. and Mrs. Jack Trot zer of Elong. Ariz., and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Herman of Fres no, Cal. The two couples were house guests of Mr. and Mrs. W. A Sutherland at their home on Park street. Mr. Herman and Mrs. Pretzer are the brother and sister of Mrs. Sutherland Group to Meet At Taylor Home The executive group of the Women's Missionary Federation will meet at the home of the president, Mrs. R. Mrs. Green Has Bridge Luncheon Mrs. Gordon R. Green enter tained at her attractive home on the Old Stage road Thursday afternoon with a buffet lunch eon and bridge party. Hunsakers Hosts To Several Guests Holiday visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Hun saker included Mr. and Mrs. Max Hess of Eugene, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hess of Sacramento. Cal., Parker Hess of Ashland, Mr. and Mrs. Osborne Doane and children, Jaclyn and Diane of San Francisco, Cal. Mrs. Doane is Mrs. Hunsaker's sis ter and Max Hess. Paul Hess and P a rk e r Hess are her brothers. During their slay here the visitors Journeyed to Crater lake. Prizes Given At Card Party Mrs. Olga Bowdish and Jesse Wagner were awarded the grand prizes last week at the regular card party sponsored by the Eagles' auxiliary. The weekly parties have proved to be so successful that the committee has decided to continue with them throughout this month. N. Moty of Klamath Falls. The popular young Medford miss received her early school ing at St. Mary's Academy in this city. Later she attended Marylhurst college in Oswega. Mr. Moty, who resided in Medford until moving to Klam ath Falls about five years ago, attended the University of Port land. No definite date for the wed ding has been set. Harvey s Observe Wedding Date ' Mr. and Mrs. Homer H. Har vey observed their fortieth wed ding anniversary Thursday eve ning when they held open house for fifty friends. A family reunion celebrating the holidays and the anniver sary was also enjoyed at the Harvey home. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Harvey and three sons of El Cajon, Cal., Mr. and Mrs. Earl Boardman and three sons of Dunsmuir, Cal., Mr. and Mrs. Keith Miller and four sons of Seattle and Miss Opal Harvey of this city. Theta RhoClub To Install Group The Theta Rho club will in stall new officers at its regu lar session Thursday evening. Bay City Couple Visit Olson Home Mr. and Mrs. Frank J. An drews of San Francisco left yes terday for their home in the bay city after having spent the holi days here with their daughter Miss Joan Andrews. Mrs. An drews' parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Olson and her sister Elsie Brown at their home on North Peach street. Miss Joan has made her home with her grandparents for the past few month. She is secretary to Rawles Moore, attorney. Group Visits in San Francisco Among the valley residents who are visiting in and around San Francisco for the New Year holiday are Mr. and Mrs. George M. Roberts. Phon. 97 tattta Mrs. Faber New Worthy Matron, Is Installed In Rites The new officers of Nevita chapter No. 93 O. E. S. were installed Wednesday evening at one of the most impressive in stallations ever held in Central Point. Preceding the ceremony Mrs. Edwin Andren sang "Star of the East," accompanied by Mrs. Sam Koehler. The instal ling officers were conducted to the chapter room by the retiring marshal, Mrs. Clara Vincent. Mrs. Evelyn Skyrman presided and welcomed Mrs. Esther Mer ritt Sanderson, past grand chap lain of Oregon and past matron of Nevita chapter, as installing officer and presented her in the East. Mrs. Sanderson then pre sented her assistants as follows: Mrs. Rose Bishop, past matron of Rose City chapter No. 86 of Portland, installing chaplain; Mrs. Gladys Jewett, installing marshal and Mrs. Ethel Free man, past matron of Nevita chapter, installing organist. The installing marshal then conducted the officers-elect to the chapter room. All the mem bers wore floor-length white dresses and carried bouguets of red carnations tied with red streamers. The worthy matron-elect, Beu lah Faber, wore white chiffon velvet with long sleeves and a slight train. When she was in stalled her young son Master Donald escorted her to the East. Other officers installed were: Hensley Holt, worthy patron; Margaret Swing, associate ma tron; Merritt Swing, associate patron; Gladys Beebe, secretary; Elizabeth Faber, treasurer; Bertha Bonney, conductress; Lillie Holt, associate conduct ress; Betta Pankey, chaplain; Isabel Lavin, marshal; Sadie Koehler, organist; M o n t e 1 1 a Freeland, Ada; Marjorie Pena, Ruth; Ethel Stimson, Esther; Roberta Andren, Martha; Lolita Massey, Electa; Ann Briggs, warder, and Ray Briggs, senti nel. After the installation of the five star points, little Patsy Faber received , flowers from each point and presented them to her mother. During the in stallation ceremonies Mrs. Elsie Carlton Strang, accompanied by Mrs. Doris Condit Lantz, sang: "Passing By", "Love's Old Sweet Song" and "When I Grow Too Old To Dream". Her singing was very much enjoyed and added much to the beauty of the installation ceremony. Special guests for the evening who were escorted to the East and introduced by Mrs. Sander son, included the junior past queen and the newly installed queen of Job's Daughters of Medford with some of the offi cers. These guests were the Misses Colleen Stephenson, Charlotte Older, Ruth Nordwick Nannette Holmes and Mary Lee Strang. Mrs. Sanderson, the guardian for the local Job's Daughters, also introduced W. P. Brooks, associate guardian and Mrs. Strang, a member of the council. The chapter rooms and the dining room were decorated in keeping with the red and white color combination worn by the women. The decoration com mittee was composed of Lillie Holt, Roberta Andren and Har old Head. The dining room com mittee was headed by Mrs. Clara Vincent and her assistants in cluded Mrs. Bertha Bursell, Mrs. Marie Stone. Mrs. Delia Tex and Mrs. Geraldine Askwith. The first regular meeting held by the new officers will be January 9th at 8 o'clock in the Masonic Temple at Central Point. 1 Doerrt Hav House Guest Mr. and Mrs. John E. Doerr have as their house guest, Miss Hortense Elliott of San Fran cisco, who plans to visit here until after New Year's. She is the sister of Mrs. Doerr. Wimers Horn From North Mr. and Mrs. O. R. AT Four Couples Are Hosts for Holiday Dance Party Friday One of the largest holiday af fairs took place Friday evening at Dreamland hall when four Medford couples were hosts for a dancing party. Giving the affair were Mr. and Mrs. C. Rease Braley, Mr. and Mrs. John C. Boyle, Mr. and Mrs. Allen R. Smith and Mr. and Mrs. Frank P. Farrell. Over two hundred guests were bidden to the party and enjoyed dancing to tunes by Whipple's orchestra. Dreamland was decorated in a clever forest effect with Christmas trees and other greenery being used in abundance. Among out-of-town guests at tending were Mr. and Mrs, C. A. Turner of Yreka, Cal. Mrs. Turner is Mrs. Boyle's sister. Miss Helen Patton, daughter of Mrs. Braley, of San Francisco, Mr. and Mrs. Morris Millbank of Grants Pass, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hart of Klamath Falls and Miss Pat Mayo of Portland, the niece of Mrs. Earl B. Lodge-Club- Church Announcements Get-Together Club Dinner Get-Together club will enter tain with a New Year's dinner for members and their families Monday at 1 o'clock in the Eagles' hall at 42 North Front street. States Banquet January 23. '40 The Methodist church annual states banquet will be an event of January 23. The affair, which is anticipated by scores of local residents,' originated about 15 years ago. Lady Elks to Meet Tuesday . Lady Elks will gather Tues day afternoon at 1:30 o'clock in the Elks Temple for dessert luncheon and an afternoon of cards, pool and bowling. Com mittee in charge includes Mes dames Charlie Gilbert, Maude Snider, Stanley Sherwood and C. E. Jagger. P. E. O. Enjoyed Recent Meeting P. E. O. chapter AA met Wednesday at the home of Mrs A. P. Butler on Hillcrest road for luncheon and a Christmas party. Mrs. Leland Mentzer was as sistant hostess. Mrs. Walt E. Hoppe entertained with a Christ' mas reading. Degree of Honor Meet Thursday Degree of Honor will hold a business meeting Thursday evening at 8 o clock in club rooms. Installation of officers will be a feature of the even ing. The ceremony was performed at high noon in the Methodist parsonage by the Rev. F. C Taylor. They were attended by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Webb of Central Point. The bride wore a green cos tume suit trimmed with red fox fur. Her corsage was of Talisman roses. Mrs. Webb wore a blackberry - colored ensemble with matching corsage of gar denias and wine roses. Following a week spent in Portland and vicinity, Mr. and Mrs. Patterson are at home In Central Point. Mrs. Patterson is a graduate of Medford high school and Southern Oregon College of Education and has taught for the past several years in Cen tral Point. Mr. Patterson is a graduate of Central Point high school and operates the General Pet roleum service station in Cen tral Point. auxiliary will convene Wednes day evening at 6:30 o'clock in the armory for a pot-luck din ner, after which joint installa tion of officers will take place. Merrick and Mrs. John E. Doerr will act as the assistant hostesses. Navy Mothers Will Convene Navy Mothers' club will con vene Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock at Medford airport. An all-day session with a covered dish luncheon at noon will be enjoyed. Members are to gather at 9:45 o'clock at the Chamber of Commerce for transportation to the airport. Pythian Sisters To Install Group Pythian Sisters -will hold in stallation of officers Tuesday evening at 8 o'clock in the K. P. hall. MeetinV Tuesday Evening Crater Lake post of Veterans of Foreign Wars and its auxili ary will meet in the Medford armory at 8 o'clock Tuesday evening for initiation and a so cial hour at which time the post will entertain the auxiliary. League Group Meets Tuesday Government and foreign pol icy department of the Jackson county League of Women Vot ers will convene Tuesday even ing at 8 o'clock at the home of Mrs. Justin Smith, 1013 Oak daie avenue. j Mrs. Montgomery visit Perrys Mrs. Naomi Montgomery of Portland spent the holidavs here visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Perry on East Main street. Mrs. Montgomery has been coming to Medford as the Perry's house guest at Christ mas time for the past ten years. Mrs. Maxwell Is Installed as Star Worthy Matron Mrs. Alliean Maxwell and her officers were installed on Friday evening at the Masonic hall in Jacksonville, for Adarel chapter No. 3, Order of Eastern Star. The hall was decorated in plants and flowers appropriate to the season. Dorothy Christian, honorary marshal, introduced the installing officers. Mrs. Lulu Saulsberry and Vivian Wilson, who were welcomed to the east by the worthy patron, Ira Lu man. Mrs. Saulsberry then in troduced three past matrons to assist in the installation, Mrs. Jennie Riddell, installing mar shal; Mrs. Nelle Fick, installing organist; Mrs. Myrtle Merrified, installing chaplain. The following officers were installed for the ensuing year: Mrs. Alliean Maxwell, worthy matron; Ira Luman, worthy pa tron; Mrs. Fay Peters, associate matron; Frank Knutzen, associ ate patron: Mrs. Lela Shores, secretary; Mrs. Anna Langley, treasurer; Mrs. Mattie Luman, conductress; Mrs. Dorothy Wal dron, associate conductress; Mrs. Anna Cater, chaplain; Mrs. Lulu Saulsberry, marshal; Mrs. Ella Gould, organist; Mrs. Mabel Todd, Ada; Miss Mollie Britt, Ruth; Mrs. Jeanette Spencer, Esther; Mrs. Vera Thomas, Martha; Mrs. Margaret Knutzen, Electa; Mrs. Libbie Root, ward er: Axel Lundgren, sentinel. Miss Iris Thomas was dainty as flower girl. Mrs. Jennie Riddell, marshal, aided by the Star Points put on a lovely floral degree in honor of Mrs. Maxwell. Mr. George Maddox, accom panied by Mrs. Maddox, sang three beautifuf selections, and the trumpet quartet of Medford senior high presented two num bers. Mrs. Anna Cater present ed the worthy matron with flow ers from the chapter, and Mrs. Lela Shores presented a gift from the members. Mr. Langley gave a gavel made especially for the worthy matron. There were numerous other gifts, for which Mrs. Maxwell, in a gracious speech, thanked the chapter. An ovation was given to Miss Mollie Britt, who was installed for the forty-third time as an offifer in Adarel chapter. After the close of the installa tion a banquet was served in the beautifully decorated dining room by Mrs. Violet Wilson, Mrs. Dora Dorothy, Mrs. Lola Mclntyre, and their committee. There was a large attendance at the meeting, visitors coming from all parts of the valley. Marian Moore Is Thursday Hostess Miss Marian Moore entertain ed members of her bridge club and a few additional guests Thursday evening at the Old Stage road home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rawles Moore. Guests included the Misses Clarita and Frances McCormick, Mrs. Clarence L. Shewalter (nee Eloise Knox) of Redding, Cal., Mrs. Harvey Robertson, Miss Harriet Sparrow, Mrs. Robert Emmons (nee Justine Miller) of Riverside, Cal., Miss Ruth Hill, Miss Jarvie Thompson, Miss Pa tricia Thompson and the Misses Barbara and Mildred Drury. Dessert bridge was enjoyed. Mrs. Robertson won the prize. The affair was in the form of a Christmas party. Resolve to have free dom from washday this year!
