PAflTC RTX MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 29, 1939. Sport Graphs Billy Hulen ayi: I. Pickem Take Final Fling At Grid Predicting Rogue Valley Golfers Are Paired for East -West Match San Francisco, Dec. 29 Mr. I. Pickem, with over month to convalesce from casualties suffered during the grid season proper, makes his 193B exit to day by taking pot-shots at the five major "bowl" games and the East-West Shrine shindig, which has drawn him to this town. Pickem's wounds are entirely healed, he is back on his feet again and feeling frisky, and he wouldn't be surprised to come up with perfect New Year's Day callings. The weath er is lovely here, the sun is shining, and how is everything In Medford? Because Pickem will be among those present when the East and West start snarling at each other in Kezar stadium Monday, he'll lead off his final 1939 prognostication-program as follows: EAST-WEST: Medford's Bob by Smith will be flinging his left arm all over the lot, so how can Pickem pick anything but the West? It would be plain treason to call the East, and anyway the dopester honestly believes the Babe-Hollingbery-Blff Jones clan will show those easterners a thing or two. With Smith cooperating with Kay Eakin of Arkansas and Zimmer man of San Jose State, the West giants will romp to a 13 to 7 victory over the club of Bernie Bierman and Andy Kerr. TENNESSEE-U.S.C. Pickem figures It thisawayi The Tro. Jans, in their last two ball games, looked anything but a great team. They were mighty lucky to beat Washington and ile U.C.L.A. Tennessee, on the ether hand. Is at least as good a defensive team as Duke was last season, and the Vols have an offense to go with their Impregnable line. It all boils down to the Pickem predic tion that Tennessee will wal lop the Jonesmen by three touchdowns to naught. TEXAS AGGIES TULANE. This Sugar bowl classic might turn out to be the best of the day. Williamson rates the teams one-two, respectively, in the na tion. The Aggies are unbeaten end untied, while Tulane has only a tie on Its recdrd. This really Is a coin-flipping affair, as both clubs look equal in every respect, but Pickem'll string along with the Aggies about 20 to 14. GEORGIA TECH-MISSOURI. Paul Christman will probably be in there firing the leather like a machine gun, but Georgia Tech should have a slight ad vantage because of being used to the southern weather. It's in the Orange bowl, in case you have forgotten.. Anyway, It's Georgia Tech by a 12 to 6 tally. CLEMSON - BOSTON COL LEGE. In this Cotton bowl frac as at Dallas, Texas, Jim Kim brough will lead his Clemson aggregation to a 7 to 0 conquest of B. C. Like Missouri, Boston will be hampered by the sun shine, while Clemson will be right In its element. ARIZONA STATE - CATHO LIC UNIVERSITY. Another eastern team will find the going too hot in this Sun bowl strug gle, and Arizona State will up set a fine Catholic University eleven which has lost only one game this season. The score: Arizona State 20 Catholic 7. L WILL BE PLAYED NEW MS DAY Players Asked To Telephone Opponent For Arrange ment of Teeing-Off Time. 10 Seattle, Doc. 29.
