The offices will be reopened Tuesday after the New Year's holiday. Gets Permit A permit was Issued yesterday at the city building inspector's office to L. C. House to complete the second floor of the apartment house at 215 North Ivy street. Stated cost of the construction was $3,000. On Visit Here Ralph Mcln tyre, jailer at the Lane county Hail, arrived last night to be a guest of his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Clow, during the New Year's holiday period. Mr. Clow is Jackson county Jailer. Plan Passengers H. R. Spin ner arrived from Portland by United Mainliner this forenoon. Leaving on the same plane for Los Angeles were Ray Mead, W. G. Brown and V. C. May, Eugene business men en route to Pasadena to witness the Rose Bowl game Monday. A. Binder left for Los Angeles by Main liner last evening. Enrolled Harry Young, Jr., eldest son of Mr. and. Mrs. H. E. Young, plans to leave here Tuesday evening by train for East St. Louis, 111., where he has been enrolled in the Jan uary class of aviation adminis tration at the Parks Air college. The college enrolls only young men having exceptionally high scholastic records and Harry was being congratulated today upon his success in meeting entrance requirements. Having been prominent in numerous activities here, he has many friends in Medford who will regret his departure. To Visit Miss Betty Vilm of 203 Genessee street plans to leave tomorrow for Fort Klam ath where she will be a guest at the home of Mr. and Mis. John Dougherty over the New Year's holiday period. Miss Vilm will travel via Crater Lake na tional park. To Meet Canton and auxil iary will hold a special meeting Saturday morning in the I. O. O. F. hall for inspection review. Guest members from Grants Pass and Klamath Falls "will attend. The meeting will be preceded by a covered dish din ner at 6:30 o'clock. Boswell Due Carl Boswell, former Medford high school teacher and critic for the Toast- masters club, is expected to arrive here tomorrow morning to spend several days visiting at 905 West Tenth street. Mr. Boswell is now teaching In Oakdale, Cal. Camera Stolen City police were notified yesterday that a Falcon miniature camera was stolen from the car owned by W. V. Jones of San Bernardino, Cal., while the auto was parked in front of 343 Apple street, home of Mr. Jones' parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Jones, whom he has been visiting. The car was not locked, the police were told. Corlies Here Austin Corlies, who has been in the U. S. navy for the past four years on the ship Astoria, is in Medford vis iting his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Corlies of 117 Laurel street, and his aunt, Mrs. George Codding, and family of 1015 Queen Ann avenue. (P) Soviet Russia, whose communiques on the Finnish campaign of late have been of the nothing-import-ant-to-report variety, has switch ed generals and renewed rigid censorship of foreign news dispatches. Gen. G. M. Stern, hero of Russia's "vest pocket" war of 1938 with Japanese Manchou kuoan forces, was reliably re ported chosen as chief of the Leningrad district and of a re inforced red army to fight Fin land. Gen. K. A. Meretskoff, former commander, was said to have been called on the carpet Dec. 22 to explain the lack of impres sive successes in the invasion. His dismissal as head of the Fin nish drive was said to have followed. IE TALK IS REVIVED Portland, Dec. 29. (fP) The establishment of an air route between here and Klamath Falls via The Dalles, Prineville, Redmond and Bend is planned by Oregon Airways. Harry Stearns, general man ager, said the recently reorgan ized company would start sur vey flights when weather permitted. The company has operated a daily round trip passenger schedule between Portland and Coos bay since June 1. SALES TAX SEEN ONLY SCHOOL AID Portland, Dec. 29. (IP) The financial problem facing Ore gon's schools can only be met bv a sales tax, William J. Mc- . Kenzie, Portland school direc tor, said yesterday. McKenzie told the 40th an nual convention of the Oregon Teachers' association that new revenue had to be found before Oregon could increase its con tribution to schools. Rex Putnam, state superinten dent of public instruction, urged " teachers to keep up their fight to have the legislature pass a retirement measure. The Bumsteads that happy, hectic family of cartoon strip, screen and radio fame return to the New Rialto Theatre for Sunday and Monday in "Blon die Brings Up Baby", newest of the series based on the popu lar Chic Young comic strip. "Two Thoroughbreds", featur ing Jimmie Lydon and Joan Bro del, two new juveniles, will play as the added feature with "Blondie Brings Up Baby". 2,000 AUTOISTS APPLY FOR TAGS JOSEPHINE COUNTY HEADS CRITICIZED Grants Pass, Ore., Dec. 29. (fP) Josephine county affairs show evidences, Auditor Alfred W. Mundt said in a report pub lic today, of apparent irregular ities, unstandardized practices. and actions of doubtful legality. Mundt investigated county offices, practices and finances at the request of the county court. The 23-page document was almost entirely devoted to criticisms of official actions. In the neighborhood of 2,000 Jackson county autoists have purchased license stickers for 1940, but to date there has been no rush at the sheriff's office, though a steady business has been underway all week. To morrow is expected to bring something of a rush. The state police have served notice, there will be no period of grace, and auto drivers on or after January 1, bearing neither 1940 plates nor temporary stick ers, are subject to arrest. On Monday, the Bill and Elbert Blgham families Joined the rest of the Blgham sons ! and daughters in a family party at the home of Mrs. ALetta Blgham in Sams Valley. Forty-one members of the family were present. Mr. and Mra. Louis Anderson and family spent Monday in Central Point with Mrs. Anderson's mother and father, Mr, and Mra. Hare. Mr. and Mrs. Day. P) A 15-year survey of the four largest Pacific coast cities Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and Portland shows there is an increase in homicides every time there is an execution for a crime, Prof. R. H. Dann of Ore gon State college told the clos ing session of the Pacific Socio logical society convention today. LID TO STAY I Portland, Dec. 29. VP) Chief of Police Harry M. Niles heaved a sympathetic sigh today but said: "Nothing doing. The Sunday blue law will take the jitter out of jittcrbugging New Year's eve." To dozen persons inquiring about celebrations he replied "The city attorney has ruled against dancing New Year's eve, so we will have to Invoke the laws." Not only that, but he an nounced an increase in the dance hall patrol for Sunday night St. Joseph, Mo., Dec. 29. (P) The St. Joseph Gazette said today it had learned from "us ually reliable sources" that Don Faurot, University of Missouri football coach, has agreed verb ally to taking over the football duties at Stanford but no an nouncement will be made until after January 1. On that date Faurot's Big Six championship eleven meets Georgia Tech In Miami's Orange bowl. Faurot will be paid $8,500 annually by the Pacific coast school, the Gazette said, and is now negotiating for a five-year contract with a sliding wage scale.
