Chimney Fire The fire de
partment's chemical crew stood
by yesterday afternoon while
soot in the chimney at the Wil
liam Young residence at 1110
West 11th street burned itself
out. No damage was done. The
alarm was received at 3:41 p. m.
Snow at Lake Four inches
of snow fell in Crater Lake na
tional park during the night
and it was still snowing at 8
o'clock this morning when ran
gers gave the daily weather re
port by short-wave radio. Snow
on the ground at headquarters
was 35 inches deep this morn
ing. The snow was described
as "normal pack wet." Park
roads were covered with packed
snow and tire chains were nec
essary for safe driving, the
rangers said. The weather was
cloudy, visibility zero. Lowest
temperature during the night
was 26 degrees. It was raining
this morning at Union Creek
and at Oregon Caves national
monument, according to radio
reports received at Crater Lake
national park offices here.
To Portland Mr. and Mrs.

for Portland where they will
visit friends over the New
Year's holiday. Mr. Prentice
will also attend a business con
vention during the stay. They
expect to return to their home

of a year-end rally, stock mar
ket leaders today turned around
and pushed up fractions to more
than 2 points.
Slightly higher tendencies
were in evidence at the start,
but dealings were light and
minus signs plentiful. Prices
soon began to harden, however,
and volume picked up on the
swing. Near the close extreme
gains were shaded in some
cases. Transfers were around
1,000,000 shares for the second
time in two weeks.
