MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD. OREGON, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 21, 1939. PAGE THREE COMBINED EFFORT IN NEXTCMIGN (continued irom page one) cians, through state primary laws, have seen to it since 1912 that there can be no successful third party. "But the liberals might , call tor a sacrifice hit. Sometimes you can show strength nega tively as well as positively." Under questioning, Ickes ex pressed the belief that it was possible that the Democratic party would name a "conserva tive" in 1940. Politicians, he said, control the party nominat ing conventions. His idea, he added, is that there should be a nationwide primary for the se lection of presidential and vice presidential nominees. When questioned about his views on Vice President Gar ner's recent announcement he would accept the Democratic nomination, Ickes said he pre ferred not to indulge in per sonalties but to draw a general line of demarcation between conservatives and liberals.
