PAGE SEVEN 1939 WHEAT CROP FAR BELOW YIELD IN PREVIOUS YEAR Final Crop Report Shows 754,971,000 Bushels as Against 931,702,000. Sugar beets, 10,691,000 tons; 11,615,000 and 8,466,000; Hops, 39,380,000 'lbs.; 35,261,000 and 34.079,000. Peaches, 61,730,000 bu.; 51. 945.000 and 4, 151,000; pears, 30.910,000; 32,473,000 and 25, 489.000; grapes, 1,471,000 tons; 2,704,000 and 2,215,000; Cran berries (6 states), 671,000 bbls.; 476,000 and 599,000. Washington, Dec. 20. Pi The agriculture department in its final crop report today said wheat production this year was 754,971,000 bushels, and tne corn crop, 2,619,137,000 bushels. Wheat production totaled 931,702,000 bushels last year and averaged 752,952,000 bush els in the ten years, 1928-37. Last year's corn crop was 2, 662,197,000 bushels, while the ten-year average production was 2,309,674,000 bushels. Oat production this year was 937,215,000 bushels, compared with 1,068.431,000 bushels last year, and 1,049,300,000 bushels the ten-year average. The potato crop was 360,991, 000 bushels in 1939, while last year's was 374,163,000 bushels, and the ten-year average was 871, 258,000 bushels. Wheat production this year was harvested as follows: Winter wheat, 563,431,000 bushels, compared with 688, 133,000 last year, and 560,160, 000 the 10-year average. Spring wheat, 191,540,000 bushels, compared with 243,569,' 000 last year, and 192,792,000 the 10-year average. Durum wheat (included tn spring wheat) 34,360,000 bush els, compared with 40,697,000 last year, and 35,076,000 the 10-year average. Production of other crops this year, with comparative figures for last year and 1928-37 aver age, includes: Rye, 39,249,000 bushels; 55, 664.000, and 36,330,000. Washington, Dec,. 20. () A commercial apple crop of 100, 284,000 bushels for 1939 was forecast today. Last year it was 82.395,000 bushels. The agriculture department, in its last report of the year. said production was greater than last year in all sections except the western states where worm damage and hot weather re duced the crop in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Colorado. In the north Atlantic states the crop was estimated at 29,850,000 bushels while in the central states it was estimated at 22, 905,000 bushels. The department said appreci able quantities were left unhar- vested in most commercial areas because of low prices and unus ually large quantities were di verted to processing plants. The production by states for 1939 and 1938 included: Idaho, 2.150,000 and 2,451, 000; Colorado 1,100,000 and 1,- 746,000; Washington 19,500,000 and 22.400,000; Oregon 2,000, 000 and ,617,000; California 4,358,000 and 5,019,000. AT T SAMS VALLEY Sams Valley, Dec. 20. (Spl.) Sams Valley school will pre sent its Christmas program in the school auditorium Thursday at 8 p.m. The grade school children will give a playlet, "Santa Claus' Helpers," directed by Miss Lula Metzgar. High school and upper grade boys will present a religious pageant following the Bible story. The high school girls' chorus will sing carols as the story unfolds and tableaus illus trating scenes from the birth of Jesus will be presented on the stage. Special characters In the pa geant include: Joseph, Donald Grant; Mary, Margaret Thomas; angel, Mildred Thomas; Three Kings of Orient, Albert Stubble field, Cornelius Hendrickson, and Ernest Sanderson; narrators, George Wangerin and John Kinne; shepherds, Ivan Cham bers, Paul Galloway, Marion Thomas, Ralph Smith, Richard Straus. Buster Kinne, Jack Ben nett, and Wayne Milkowskl. The pageant Is directed by Miss Frances Schilling and Miss Lula Metzgar. Roscoe Larson and Harry Lowe are in charge of scenery and lights. After the program Santa will have a treat for everyone. School will officially close Thursday night after the pro gram for the holiday season and will convene again January second. 64 in Lot Angeles. OP) The Al lied supreme war council was reported today to have decided to give all moral and material aid possible to Finland without weakening their own war with Germany. It was understood that the main subject under considera tion at the three-hour meeting was the possibility of giving effective aid to the Finns in their stand against Russia. On the western front, mili tary despatches said, a French patrol made a daring daylight raid several miles within Ger- i man lines to defpal a Nazi de tachment and carry off its four officers. British troops at the front were reported to have suffered their first casualties over the week-end the result of mines, bullets and grenades while some were on night patrol duty, ac cording to military sources. (P) Thir teen survivors of the sunken Norwegian steamer Glitrefjell, 1,668-tons, were landed today at a Scottish port and asserted they believed their ship had been torpedoed. The captain and four seamen were killed and seven of the survivors wounded. The survivors were rescued by a Greek vessel after nine hour in open boats. About 50,000,000 rabbits are bred annually In Italy. Italians consume 500,000 metric tons of rabbit each year.
