Our Most Serious Menace
PRESIDENT Roosevelt wi perfectly safe In offering Senator
Taft of Ohio prize if he would explain In detail just how
he would balance the budget.
The Ohio Senator may not be exceptionally smart, but he was
too smart to fall into that trap.
For the moment he, or any other presidential aspirant, departs
from the general to the specific, in this budget-balancing field,
the trouble starts.
And neither he nor any of the other Republican hopefuls, are
going to be put in that spot.
SO the plodding and persistent son of our 27th president, will
undoubtedly continue to promise the balancing of the budget,
and be very careful to say nothing about the economics he favors
to bring that about.
In fact this budget problem, from a political standpoint, prob
ably represents the most serious menace this country faces today.
For it is obvious to any person, who ever passed elemental
arithmetic, that if any progress toward balancing the national
budget is to be made, one of two things must be done, viz. and
to-wit:
Federal expenditures must be drastically reduced. OR,
Taxes must be just as drastically increased.
The politicians can expound and expostulate until they are
blue in the face, but there is no other way out. One thing or the
other, or a combination of both MUST BE DONE, or this budget
remains out of balance and in all likelihood a steady increase
of the national deficit continues also.

Robert" wouldn't have even his cherished watch chain left to
cover his political nakedness.
Yet, If this country is ever to be saved financially, some
government must not only have the courage to SAY that, but DO

groups in opposition, can also predict when the federal budget

No Doubt Of It Now
YES how time flies, and the world with itl
It seems only yesterday we expressed the fear in this column
that Stalin might aid Hitler, in his fight against the European
democracies.
But in looking over the files yesterday, in search of another
item, we discovered the editorial in question was published last
September!
The idea was rather shocking then, and decidedly improbable.
The claim we made, that there was little practical difference be
between Stalin-Communism and Hitler-Nazlism, was particularly
resented. 1
w, only about 90 days later, the possibility of such
action is pretty well taken for granted. Every day in every
way Germany and Soviet Russia, are getting closer and closer.
In facthe conservative and cautious Oregonian now expresses
the opinion that England and France welcome such an alliance, on
the ground that Russia is lost to them anyway, and a direct break
would give the allies another avenue to get at the Nazis.
We seriously question the correctness of the term "welcome"
in this connection, but would not doubt that France and England,
might prefer Russia as an avowed, rather than a covert enemy,
which she plainly is and has been.
While as far as the charge that Stalin and Hitler are brothers
under the skin, politically speaking, is concerned, practically no
one outside of the Communist party itself, tries anymore to deny
such an assertion.
More and more in fact, the Communists themselves, in this
country at least, are defending the tactics of the Russian-German
offensive, and attacking and misrepresenting, the allied cause, as
one of imperialistic aggresr.ionl
AND now Paul Mallon reports, from Washington, that Hitler
and Stalin agents in this country, have pooled their forces
to sabotage war supplies designed for England and France, while
Russia ever since the war started has been buying up large quan
tities of a rare metal known as "molybdenum" for the benefit of
German munition makers.
It only goer, to show how quickly the map ot the world, from a
political standpoint can change, and when the process is gradual
rather than abrupt, with what comparative ease, public opinion
becomes adjusted to it, almost without being aware of the fact.

and psychological nostrums), of
course nothing has ever given
him any benefit. Sometimes he
does feel a little better but he
soon relapses. He has to neglect
his business a good share of
the time.
Acids, starches, fats, meats
and sweets disagree with him
he says. Likewise milk and eggs.
Boy, that s tough going, try
ing to choose something good to
eat without including any of
the items proscribed.
Just what the man means
when he says something "disa
grees with him" is a delicate
question which one can scarce
ly venture to dwell on. I won
der if it is anything like mashed
potato. There's an item I would
not mind if I had an allergy to

when I was a little boy. What
is the result. I have a furious
seizure if any one attempts to
foist mashed potato on me, and
as for turkey, you can have all
of it, I'll take a hot dog or any
other fish or meat' and thank
you. Oh, I can eat turkey, if my

I'd have to be terribly hungry
before I'd voluntarily push a gob
of mashed potato down my
throat.
The business man assures me
that none of the many doctors
and specialists have found any
organic trouble to account for
his condition. As nearly as 1
can understand it, his condi
tion Is a chronic progressive in
trospection. His mind never gets

world is to DO LESS AND
CHARGE MORE FOR IT.
Every time that scheme has
been tried (and it has been tried
often since the world began) the
result has been stagnation and
falling standards of living.

A railroad brakeman was
killed and two other trainsmen
were seriously hurt in a crash
of two Southern Pacific freight
trains last night that sent three
cars hurtling down a 200-foot
embankment Into the Sacramen

north of here.

Now If the good work can go on, Germany can be swept from
the seas, and Russia thrown back on land, what a different world
this will quickly be.
For the two great fears when this war was threatened, outside
of the air supremacy, were the unknown sea power of Germany,
in the direction of its U-boats and pocket battleships, and the
unknown land power of Soviet Russia, with ts inexhaustible but
untested man power.
Now, if the first fear can be exploded by a decisive naval
victory and the second by the Russian colossus being checkmated
by a tiny country, one-twentieth Its sizt on land, then it would
seem the air menace could be handled in due time, and an
ultimate allied victory, in the current vernacular, would be in
the bag.

single-track railroad Is the weak
spot in the Russian attack on
Finland. Geographically, Fin
land is roughly wedge-shaped,
with the broad end on the Baltic
and the narrow end on the Arc
tic Ocean. On the southern bor
der, strong Finnish fortifications
have thrown back the rabble of
Soviet troops. To the north, the
Russians are pushing in, threat
ening to break the Finnish
wedge In half.
But the single-track railroad
from Leningrad to Murmansk is
the Russians' only means of
transport to the north. Jammed
with troops and supplies, in poor
condition and ill-defended
against aircraft, the road could
be smashed by a couple of good
bombing expeditions. Consider
ing the average Russian ineffici
ency in repairing industrial
break-downs, smashing the Leningrad-Murmansk
line would
probably smash the Russians'
northern offensive. The tragedy
is that Finland has not got the
bombers to do the Job.

The agriculture department an
nounced today commercial
growers in 34 major onion-producing
counties of Idaho and
Oregon rejected a proposed fed
eral marketing program at their
recent referendum.
Liberals and new dealera quarrel
among themselves as bitterly aa the
most cross-grained reactionaries. A
super-quarrel was started some time

Secretary of state Adolph A. Berle Jr..
Arthur Garfield Hays of the Civil
Liberties union and Congressman
Martin Dies to lunch with him at
the University club, Ernst, a busy,
new deallsh lawyer, wanted to hear
Dies' views. Dies made a good Im
pression on the lunch party, arguing
that he was h liberal by conviction,
feared that the red label would be
used to discredit the liberal cause,
and was going after the communists
for that reason.
The next day. however. Dies re
leased the list of Washington mem
bers of the League tor Peace and
Democracy, and pinned the red label
he had talked of so deprecattngly on
every one of them. Hla luncheon
companions were distinctly outraged,
but. In the brief Interval, Ernst
talked of the lunch party. The rumor
spread through new deal ranks that
Ernst and Frank, both known for
their opposition to the communists,
were In cahoots with Dies.
Accordingly, there waa a tremen
doua row when Frank was sighted
at a cocktail party by Irascible
Gardner Jackson of labor Non
partisan leimue, who used to work
for the SEC chairman In the old
daya before the AAA purge. Prank
could not convince Jackson there was
no plot with Dies, and Jackson Is
now going round town suggesting
thst Frank and Ernst ought to be
Investigated In their turn.
All of which explains why Finnish
ministers In every capital where
planes are available. Including H)al
mar Procope her in Washington,
are frantically pleading for planes.
In the long run. American planes
may well find their way to the Finns.
A large credit, plus some tinkering
with the American. French, and Brit
ish military priorities, would allow
the Finns to take some of the planet
now pouring off our assembly lines
The British have sent a few planes,
and the French may send a few. For
substantial, Immcdlnt aid. however,
the Finns must look to Italy, desper
ately anxious to keep Russia too busy
to Invade the Balkans.

To the Editor: The mistletoe
throughout California now
awaits the Christmas merry
makers. Near the Oregon line
the children will gather it from
cottonwoods or from oaks.
Along the Mexican border those
searching for it will show many
a scratch from cactus barbs. In
some places on the desert the
mistletoe furnishes the only
moisture for the birds. They in
turn serve the mistletoe. Ad
hering to their bills its sticky
seeks are carried by them while
flying. Then they are removed
by rubbing against other cactus
or other trees at a distance. It
is this transportation by birds
that has made possible the jour
neying of the mistletoe, until
now it is found over large areas
of America as well as Europe.
Our love for the mistletoe,
like our names of week davs.
show how persistently we cling
to the customs of our Teutonic
and pre-Teutonic ancestors.
After these became Christian
ized, the name of the old gods
persisted, even to the present, in

erence still persists in our gath
ering the mistletoe for Christ
mas. This has been substituted
