PAGE TWO MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 8, 1939. STILL HOT ISSUE FOR FBJJGENTS J. Edgar Hoover Reveals Re lentless Search Going on; 500 Suspects Are Listed. By Jack Beardwood Tacoma, Dec. 8. (P Break ing a long silence on the na tion's most enigmatic and fiend ish kidnaping, J. Edgar Hoover, federal bureau of investigation director, revealed today the FBI still lists 300 suspects of the Charles Mattson abduction slaying. And, he declared, hli de partment never will relax Its relentless search lor tne Kio naper of the Mattson boy nor the killers of Peter uavia ie vine, New York state's youthful 1038 kidnaping victim. Hoover, replying to questions on the Mattson case submitted to him by the Associated Press, said agents are still specifically assigned to the almost three-year-long quest for the man who kidnaped the 10-year old son of a prominent Tacoma doctor and left the. boy's mutiliated body In a snow-covered thicket near Everett, Wash. 500 Suspects Remain "Since the- abduction of Charles Fletcher Mattson on Dec. 27, 1936," Hoover wrote from Washington, D. C, "a to tal of 22,700 suspects have been reported to the bureau and all but 500 have been eliminated. A special squad of agents Is still working on this case, cov ering every possible lead. To date, fingerprint experts havo examined over six million fin gerprint cards In an effort to secure the Identifying data which might lead to the identifi cation of the kidnaper." Pointing out ail but two kid- napings have been "completely solved" of a total of 160 cases Investigated since passage of the federal kidnaping act in 1032, Hoover wrote: "The two unsolved cases In volving Charles Fletcher Matt son and Peter David Levlne, who was abducted on the eve ning of February 24, 1938, near New Rochelle, New York, will never be closed until the Iden tity of the wrong-doers has been established and they have been brought to justice." Agents are working quietly In Tacoma. Periodically reports seep out of the courthouse that "the Mattson children are look ing over another suspect." Iden tity of the agents is kept secret. Children Hold Key Key figures in attempts to Identify the dark, heavy-bearded man who abducted the child are the two Mattson children, William, now 18, and Muriel, 16, and Virginia Chntficld, 17, of Seattle. They got a glimpse of the abductor when Charles was taken from the Mattson home. Miss Chatfield was a house guest at the time. The poster Issued In an effort to catch the kidnaper has re sulted In the huge number of suspects. An artist composed the abductor's picture from de scription's the three children supplied. One transient was ar rested so many times he se cured an affidavit signed by several police officials testifying "this man has been Investigated In connection with the Mattson case." Dr. Charles Mattson continues to carry on a brisk medical practice. Mrs. Mnttson has aged considerably since her youngest child was kidnaped. The FBI's official reward for information leading to the kid naper's arrest has been with drawn. Several other rewards, Including one by the state of Washington, are still offered. Something unique and entire ly new is in store for southern Oregon playgoers when Angus L. Bowmer, well known drama director and actor, presents "First Night" at the Holly theater, January 19. "First Night" Is composed of four one act plays of diversified nature. Two of the plays were written by Mr. Bowmer and will be seen here for the first time. They are "Without Ro mance?" and "Rogue Rest". The former has to do with the ques tion of whether or not a ro mantic nature is a handicap to an actor and Is the story of how a successful leading man and his daughter answer the ques tion, each in their own way. The play comprises only two charac ters. "Rogue Rest," a rather risque comedy, involves a honeymoon ing couple. Complications arise from the presence of the girl's mother and father and scene of the event is a summer cabin on the Rogue River. For the third play In "First Night", Mr. Bowmer selected Schnitzler's "The Farewell Sup per" In which the lead is a so phisticated young Vlenese. Two others complete this cast. Final production Is "The Drums of Oude" by Austin Strong. This is a melodrama about an uprising In India in which cities burn and throats are cut but the British army and love emerge triumphant. Eight characters appear. Local talent will make up the casts which will be announced early next week by Mr. Bow mer. Tryouts were held Wed nesday and Thursday evenings. ICKES DOUBTS IF F. R.
