UP) And you think you have Christmas shopping problems? Be glad you're not In Berlin. John Raleigh, a National Broadcasting company represen tative in the German capital de scribed his Christmas shopping expedition in a short-wave broadcast today and said the most appreciated gift in all Ber lin would be a pound of coffee but that was out of the ques tion. There are toys aplenty In this toy-making country, he said, but most of them are of a mili tary nature. Of food and other necessities, Raleigh added, the supply is limited. The largest sections in the shops, he said, are devoted to military toys. The German newspapers, he said, which usually carry many pages of Christmas advertising are almost barren. Even with extra food allowances for the Christmas season, he said, the festive boards in Germany this Christmas will be "pitifully laden." There will be no meat, perhaps some extra dried peas or beans and perhaps a little gingerbread. 1 P.M. Ti (Contributed) Funeral services for Zera Ed ward Dahack, 70, will be held Friday at 1 p. m., in the Perl Funeral Home chapel. Inter ment will be In the family plot in the Central Point cemetery. The Rev. D. E. Millard will of ficiate. Friends are respectfully Invited to attend. Mr. Dahack, who passed away Monday as the result of a gun shot wound, was born in Bloom Ington, 111., and spent his early youth there, moving with his family to Jackson county at tne age of fifteen. He had made his home at Eagle Point, Meaiora and Lake Creek since. In 1B11 he married Miss Mary McNeil. She passed away five years ago. Since that time he and his brother, Irvin, had made their home at Lake Creek. He was a lover 'of nature and the great outdoors and possessed a strong homing Instinct. He was taken from our midst while de fending what he believed to be his right of "privacy in the home" which the early fathers ihed their blood to establish for our enjoyment. For 20 years Mr. Dahack labored untireingly to develop a place among the hills near Soda Springs which would be worthy the name of home. Strenuous labors were the pleas ant pastime of this man known to all as one of sterling charac ter. At the time of his death he had a farm that was admired by all who saw it. There is a nice family orchard of peaches, prunes, apples, etc., bearing fruit for someone to eat because "he planted a tree." Yes, and a variety of berries which he often shared with his neighbors. He was self-supporting in every respect, living always by the labor of his own hands. In this way, as in other re spects he may well be a worthy pattern for many citizens, both young and old. Flowers from .his own garden will be placed on his grave tomorrow. Besides Ills brother he Is sur vived by three sisters, Mrs. Dora Kauffmnn of Bloomington, 111., Mrs. Minnie Cascbcer of Los Angeles, Cnlif., and Mrs. Ida Mathews of Eagle Point, Ore., also eight nephews. LEGION TO VISIT Officers and members of Med ford post of the American Le gion will go to Grants Pass Monday night and Ashland Tuesday night to attend the regular meetings of the Legion posts in the two neighboring cities. The visits are in the nature of pre-conference rallies to create interest in the dis trict conclave to be held in Mcdford December 20. Following the regular meet ings of Medford post and auxil iary, December 13, the annual Christmas party will be held, with Santa Claus on hand to distribute presents to all mem bers from the tree. All attend ing are requested by Command er H. J. Meirlng to bring a ten cent toy. After the opening of the presents they will be sent to Roscburg for children of vet erans in the hospital. Refresh ments will follow distribution of the presents. Members of Medford post wishing to go to Grants Pass or Ashland for the rallies are asked to telephone Commnndi.-c Meirlng, 1264 or 956-L, at once for transportation reservations. Members going to Grants Pass Monday are to meet at Hotel Medford at 7 p, m. NEW DEVICE DETECTS SPIKES IN SAW LOGS Washington, Dec. 7. (TP) The United States forest serv ice, seeking to avert cosily and sometimes fatal sawmill acci dents, announced today that a device had been developed to detect spikes and other metal objects buried in logs. The machine, which Is elec trically operated and easily car ried by one man, sets up a howl when moved over metal imbed ded in wood.
