MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNT,. MEDFORD. OREGON1. WEDNESDAY. DECEMBER 6. 1939. PAGE FIVE Friends Say F. R. Will Run Only if Emergency Arises By W. B. Ragsdal. Washington, Dec. 6. (JP) The seasoned appraisal of some of President Roosevelt's close friends is that he will run again only in the event of a critical international emergency next summer. They are convinced his per sonal desire now is not to run; hut he has not positively turned his back on the possibility. Many factors enter into their calculation. Not the least is that they figure Mr. Roosevelt has finished with all of the major phases of the domestic program he had laid out for himself. He signaled in his message to this congress at the outset of its first session that he had finished with his bigger legis lative endeavors, that the prin cipal thing left to do was to ma chine down the tools of govern ment that had been wrought during the early years of his first two administrations. His advocates say the presi dent already has written, in delibly, his ideas of government into the nation's laws, that he APPLE GROWER TELLS H0f HE MAKES MONEY Wenatchee, Wash., Dec. 8. Of) Money can still be made In apples with the industry Just as it is, Edward C. Clarke, Pes hastin grower, told the Wash ington State Horticultural asso ciation yesterday. He said he had made money every year for the last seven years despite lost markets, low prices and increased pests. He said he had "beaten the game" through elimination of the cost of washing his apples and that his packing costs were but 11 cents a box as compared with the average commercial cost of 25 cents. The demoralized apple indus try was the topic of discussi'n for the first day's session of the 35th annual convention. Closing time for Too Late to Clas sify Ads Is 1:30 p. m. Phon 34 has changed permanently the attitude of government toward the common man. They argue that the change of attitude was the important thing. How it is to be mani fested in the future is a matter of mechanics. Principles and policies appeal to the president. Too many details are boring. For that reason, many of his friends feel he would be more than willing to set down upon the shoulders of another man the enormous load he has been carrying for the last six and a half years. The White House has a glamorous appeal but it is not a very restful place to live. Tt hie nil Ua n.;.,r,n.t nf . ,rtJ i , una an nic Jitkov; Ul a vcvi- dine in a ripnartment stnrp win dow. Morover, these friends say the man who enunciates legislative policies is not always the pro per person to mold them into smoothly working organisms. Like the author of an attempted literary masterpiece, he has pet phrases which must not be tam pered with. Another man would not scruple to use the shears. PROGRAMS IN SCHOOLS OF CITY AND COUNTY Schools of Medford and of Jackson county, at large, are cooperating again this year in the wide spread educational program, carried on by the Jackson County Public Health association in connection with the annual Christmas Seal Sale, Miss Helen Bullis, county chair man, announced today. Special programs are being given in all Medford schools this week with every depart ment participating in educating students to better protect them selves against tuberculosis. Next week schools through out the county will conduct special programs and those in the rural districts will be given an opportunity to buy the Christmas seals. Seals will not be sold by school children this year, but every child will be given a chance to buy them, and every child will participate in the educational program. Relishes Easily Made With Winter Pears Conserves and relishes easily made, using local winter pears, will interest even the newest bride. In addition to helping out the pear growers who are handicapped with lack of for eign markets due to hostilities in Europe, housewives will find the following recipes are de lightful and more than repay the effort involved.
