Provide Details On Many
Subjects Many are Free.
Many present and prospective
home-owners are unaware of
the availability of a large num
ber of publications on the home
by the federal government and
the building industry. They
compose a large and up-to-date
library of information that will
save money and lead to better
i living if studied and applied
by the present or prospective
home-owning family. The great
er number of these publications
may be obtained free, upon
request. Those for which
charges are made can be had
, for from 5 cents to 50 cents
per copy. A study of these
publications has recently been
made by Western Homes Foun
dation, on the basis of a "List
of Published Material Relating
to Home Building and Main
tenance," prepared and publish
ed by the U. S. department of
commerce, Washington, D. C
It may be had free, by writing
the department and asking for
it by title.
Accurate Guide.
"From this list of publications
every home-owner may select
authoritative items of informa
tional material that will guide
v him accurately in the manage
ment of principal investment
his home," says W. C. Bell, chair
man of Western Homes Foun
dation. "From it the renter
may obtain similar guides to
sound and economical home
ownership. Every element of
the modern home is thoroughly
covered, with lay readers in
view.
"As an example, I cite "How
to Judge a Home,' published
by the national committee on
wood utilization of the depart
ment of commerce. This may
be had for 10 cents, from Wash
ington, D. C, or from the bu
reau of foreign and domestic
commerce, Federal building,
Seattle. Twenty-six publications
on brick and clay products are
listed. Ten of them are free

Sacramento, Nov. 25. (P)
State officials sought today to
return to California two men
accused of violating their pa
roles. Requisition papers were made
out for Robert Diaz, convicted
of auto theft in Tulare county,
and Edwin A. Primrose, con
victed in Riverside county of
burglary. Both are held at the
Oregon state penitentiary at
Salem.
The state also asked Wash
ington to return Henry Bott and
Chris Hurst, charged in Fresno
with burglary.
New York City has had 103
mayors.

raisers today face an unlavor
able hog-corn ratio for the first
time in two years.
Based on average prices on
the Chicago market, 100 pounds
of live hogs equalled in value
about 11 bushels of No. 3 yel
low corn, compared with an
average of around 14V4 bushels
of No. 3 yellow corn during the
past 24 months. At times dur
ing this past period the ratio
was 18 bushels of corn to 100
pounds of hogs. Parity, as gen
erally accepted, is 12 bushels of
corn to 100 pounds of hog.
The average price of hogs
yesterday was about S5.70 here,
compared with S7.51 a year ago,
and No. 3 yellow corn was
quoted at 503i-51!4 cents
bushel compared with about 48
cents a year ago.

dicted today that the farm vote
would determine whether the
next President was a Democrat
or Republican.
The gray-haired senator and
farm journal publisher suggest
ed this was why Republican
party .leaders were devoting so
much effort to shaping a party
agricultural policy.
"I think the northern farm
belt will decide the 1940 presi
dential election, and things look
mighty good for the Republi
cans right now," Capper said
in an interview.
"If farm prices are low and
stay low for several years, as
they have recently, there is an
inevitable swing in the farm
blt against the party in power.
"Every voter knows now that
we can't have any general pros
perity unless the farmer is mak
ing money. That's why I'm
sure the Republican party will
offer a constructive program
for 1940."
DEFENSE TAX AT
$14 PER CAPITA
Washington, Nov. 25. (JP)
The nation's defense expendi
tures, which President Roose
velt indicated yesterday would
be further increased, are aver
aging during the current year
about $14 per person man,
woman or child.
Official figures showed the
army has or anticipates funds
totaling $956,013,029, including
a deficiency estimate of $119,
080,000 which Mr. Roosevelt
sent to congress this month to
cover extraordinary expenses
due to the European war.
The navy's share of the bill
for the fiscal year ending next
June 30 totals $924,236,151, in-
eluding the deficiency estimate
of $146,049,000 for expenses of
the Atlantic coast neutrality
patrol.
GOES TO EUROPE

After three days and nights of
packing and loading at plants
here, 150 cars of fruit, prin
cipally Newtown apples, were
en route to various ports today
for shipment to the United King
dom.
Great Britain's ambargo on
fruits from the United States
takes effect November 30 and
the 150 cars probably will be
the last shipped from here
