HUBBARD -WRAY CO. 29 North Riverside Phone 1100 sray jmwwb mi mm ill i By Gail Fowler Seattle, Nov. 24. OP) Coach Tex Oliver summed it up in the University of Washington dress ing room after the game. "I just want to tell you fel lows," he shouted, "that you played a great game." And a great game the Huskies played yesterday as they turned in an upset 20-13 victory over Oregon or rather, over jack rabbit Jay Graybeal before 25, 000 Thanksgiving day fans here. It was a dingdong battle, with both teams coming from behind twice and being tied once before crashing Jack Stackpool, soph Washington fullback, boomed nine yards for the winning score in the final quarter. Jay Boots Field Goal Graybeal started the scoring by booting a field goal from a difficult angle while standing on the Husky 20. Washington came right back and rambled and soared 59 yards, with fullback Don Jones going across. Graybeal hiked up his pants and sparked another Oregon drive, finishing a 70-yard march by taking a 26-yard touchdown pass from southpaw Bob Smith. Jay unhesitatingly kicked the extra point and the halftime score was 10-7, Oregon. "Corrigan" Play Scores Starting with the second half kickoff, Washington went 65 yards to score, with Ernie Steele, the slippery halfback, going the final 17 yards on a "Corrigan" play whereby he bade adieu to his interference and romped in the opposite di rection to pay dirt. Score: 13-10. An offside penalty later rob bed Oregon of another touch down as Graybeal tossed a strike to Dick Home, sub en'j who dived across the line. Subse quent plays failed and Jay fin ally tied the count with another angle goal standing on the Husky 19. That made It 13-all. The undaunted Huskies then went 65 yards for the winning score, uncovering a pulverizing fullback in Stackpool who help ed the cause with an 18-yard run around end and nine-yard cannonball smash over guard for the score. Elmer Berg kicked the point and it was 20-13. Smith Powerhouse Heroes? There were two. Graybeal and the sensational triple-threat Husky halfback, Dean McAdams. Graybeal scored all of Oregon's 13 points, but it was McAdams who tossed the passes that broke the Web foots' collective heart. Graybeal only packed the ball three times, but he made 23 yards for a 7.67 average. Bob Smith, the burly halfback with the accurate southpaw passing arm, took the ball 11 times for 55 yards or a 4.18 average, and was the power house of the Oregon attack. WILLAMETTE DEFEATED BY WHITMAN, 8 TO 7; LOSES LEAGUE TITLE Walla Walla, Nov. 24. (Pi The Whitman college Mission aries applied the master touch to the silver jubilee celebration of Nig Borleske yesterday by de feating the highly favored Wil lamette university Bearcats, 8-7. It is unlikely that any team that Borleske has collected in his 25 years as the local school has given him a greater thrill than his romping Missionaries did in this performance. The upset victory marked the first conference defeat this year for the Bearcats and lost them the crown they had held for sev eral years. Until yesterday after noon's mishap the boys from Oregon were tied with Pacific University. Incidentally it was Whitman s first victory over Willamette since 1931. Barker Picks UCLA To Beat Beavers; Cal Over Stanford By Herb Barker New York, Nov. 24. (Pi Remembering the result of the past two weeks, this guesser will make the customary foot ball tour on tip-toe and with small hope of avoiding hidden dynamite. Penn-Cornell: By all the laws of the football guessers union. 18 to 6, yesterday, Jefferson became the first school to win the tnterscholastie title four years in succession. Cornell, unbeaten and untied, should be a cinch in this game. Penn, however, goes all out against the Big Red every year and Carl Snavely may have to use all his tremendous man power to get by. The nod goes to Cornell. Harvard-Yale: Under Dick Harlow, Harvard teams develop slowly but surely; This is the Crimson's objective and this corner, for one, thinks Harvard will win. Notre Dame-Southern Califor nia: The Irish collide with an unbeaten squad that can match Notre Dame man for man. Since its opening tie with Oregon. Southern California has run over everything in sight and gets this vote. Michigan-Ohio Slate: With Evashevski and Harmon run ning wild, this becomes one of the toughest games on the slate to "expert." We'll take Ohio State which can clinch the Big Ten title here. U.C.L.A.-Oregon State: Just as indigestible and just as dan gerous. State's plenty tough but we'll take U.C.L.A. Iowa-Northwestern: One of the season's most sensational teams against disappointing Northwestern. Possibly this is the place where the Hawkeyes and Nile Kinnick will fold but the records point to Iowa and this corner, finally convinced, tags along with Kinnick and company. Princeton-Navy: The Tigers will find it hard to key up for this but we ll risk that. Prince ton. Nebraska-Oklahoma: Ready to duck on this one. Oklahoma. Stanford-California: Just a clash of also-rans this year. If there's any edge it belongs to California. F 10 PLAY DEC. 2 Portland, Nov. 24.
