McAllister Home William H. McAllister, Medford lawyer, re turned this morning by train from Portland where he spent several days on business. He was accompanied north by Mrs. Mc Allister who remained in Salem to visit until Wednesday Driver Tests Persons want ing licenses or permits to drive cars will be examined here Wed nesday from 10 a. m. to 0 p. m. A state examiner will be in council chambers on the top floor of city hall and applicants are asked to report there. Fliegel Better J. F. Fliegel of College Hill, prominent attorney and American Legionnaire, re turned to his office for a short time today after being confined to his home for ten days with influenza. Mr. Fliegel hoped to be able to resume his practice completely tomorrow. Weather Cloudy Crater Lake national park rangers reported by radio this morning that the weather was partly cloudy, though visibility was good. There has been no snowfall in the park for some time and the west, south and east entrance roads in the park are in good condition, the rangers said. Forfaits Bail Theodore F. Stebbens, 24, a salesman, for felted $10 bail in city court this morning when he failed to ap pear to answer a city police charge of causing unnecessary noise with his automobile horn. Police said that Stebbens dis turbed occupants of several ho tels about 4 a m. Sunday by con tinually honking his auto horn. Charged with violation of the basic traffic rule, Floyd R. Hil ton of Medford was fined $10 in city court this morning. John Enright of Medford, charged with being drunk in a public place, was sentenced to 10 days in jail. Confer Wiley Wr;ght of Seattle, inspector in the private flying division of the civil aero nautics authority, conferred to day with officials of the South ern Oregon College of Educa tion in Ashland regarding the institution's civilian pilot train Ing course for which ten stu dents have enrolled. Mr. Wright also conferred with Thomas A. Culbertson, Jr., flight instructor for the course. Mr. Wright is in charge of the civilian pilot train ing program for the CAA in Oregon. Murray of 520 Dakota ave nue, linotype operator of the Mail Tribune, was reported to be doing as well as could be ex pected following an emergency operation for a perforated gas tric ulcer in Sacred Heart hospi tal last night. ... Fined $2.50 Lee James. 44 of Route 3 was fined $2.50 and $4.50 court costs by Jacksonville Justice of the Peace H. D. Mea chem Saturday. Hoard of 331 North Ivy street returned home Saturday from Oxnard, Cal., where he at tended funeral services for his grandmother Tuesday morning. Mr. Hoard was notified last Mon day morning of the death of his grandmother and he left im mediately for Oxnard by motor car. Burial took place at Po mona, Cal. ... Holiday Dinner Jackson county chapter and auxiliary. Disabled American Veterans of the World War will serve a Thanksgiving Day dinner in the Medford armory at 1 p.m. Thurs day for all disabled American veterans and their families whether or not they are mem bers of the organization, it was announced today by Carold. J. Parker, chapter commander. It will be a benefit dinner for those who do not intend to eat at home, Mr. Parker said. There will be entertainment after the dinner, the program including Harley Wilson of Ashland, violin and dance specialty, the Three Tap Dancers of Ashland and scenic motion pictures by Glenn H. Utz. Mrs. B. Stammen and Mrs. Carold J. Parker will en tertain the children attending. ... Plana Passengers Fog contin ued today to make United Air Lines schedules in the north west somewhat erratic. The Mainliner due here 10:55 this morning was held at Seattle because of fog and was reached ulled to arrive here at l:ri0 p.m. The plane due at 4:52 a.m. was held at Oakland because of fog in the north and did not arrive here until 10:20. The midnight plane last night was dispatched from Seattle early to avoid fog and arrived here at 9:30. The northbound' flag-stop Mainliner arrived at 9 last night and was grounded here until 8:30 this morning when It continued northward. The 15 passengers and crew members spent the night in the Hotel Medford. J. M. Callahan, W. B. Gruber and Miss M. Price left by Mainliner yesterday afternoon for Port land. Lieuts. James W. Grigsby and Weldon H. McBee returned by Mainliner yesterday forenoon from Portland wnere on aatur day they attended a conference of Oregon national guard offlc ers. Leaving on yesterday fore noon's plane were H Walter, to Oakland, and Miss S. W. Tait. to Sacramento, Cal. Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Thompson arrived by Mainliner from the south yes terday morning and Dr Robert E. Lee left on the same plane for Portland. The plane due here at 11:50 p.m. went through early Saturday. NO Stars In Dramatic Claudette Colbert and Henry Fonda are starred in the sea son s top production, Urums Along the Mohawk," the two-million-dollar Technicolor film play coming to the Craterian theatre tomorrow for a five-day showing. The story is based on the best-selling novel by Walter S. Edmonds of the stirring days of adventure and romance when America was young. The action is set in New York's peaceful, beautiful Mohawk valley and depicts the colonists under the Pike left on the same plane foi Los Angeles. SHIPPED TO DATE Pear shipments from the Rogue River valley up to No vember 17 totaled 1,949 cars, according to the report of the Rogue River Traffic association. Four cars of apples have been shipped. The pear shipments by var ieties were: D'Anjous, 277 ' cars; Boscs, 568; Cornice, 53; Howell, 13; Winter Nelis, four; Patrick Bar ry, one; Seickel, 14; packed Bartletts, 554; cannery Bartletts, 441; mixed varieties, 24 cars. -The records show 117 cars were dispatched between Octo ber 4 and November 17. Medford Post No. 15 Ameri can Legion will meet Wednes day night at the armory. Re ports from all Armistice chair men will be given and comman der H. J. Meiring stated today it is important that all chairmen be present. The 1940 member ship drive is now on and Med ford Post has 131 members for 1940. This number is one month ahead of last year and It is the same all over the state and na tion. The American Legion is looking forward to the largest membership on record. The Medford quota for 1940 is 250 members. Commander invites ail ex service men to Join and to visit post meetings. District conference for district 4 will be held in Medford, De cember 20 and all members are urged to keep this day in mind and to attend the days functions and banquet. GEORGE ELFERS, OF PHOENIX, DIES George Elfers, 90, a resident of Phoenix, Ore., for the past 35 years, passed away at a local hospital, early Monday morning after a prolonged illness. Mr. Elfers was born In Han over, Germany, Sept. 6, 1849. He came to the United States when he was 10 years of age, and spent his boyhood in Ohio, later he moved to Nebraska, and was united in marriage to Miss Jennie Marr, at Wahoo, Neb., on Feb. 20, 1878. she passed away March 18, 1930. He made a great many friends during his long residence in Southern Oregon, and was ad mired for his genial personality and kindliness. He is survived by three daughters. Mrs. W. M Tetherow, Central Point; Mrs. G. W. Reynolds, Oklahoma City, Okla.; Mrs. O. C. Huggins, Los Angeles, Calif., one son, Herbert Elfers, Ronan, Montana, ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Funeral services will be con ducted from the Perl funeral home Wednesday at 10 a.m. Rev. C. A. Phillips officiating. Inter ment will be In the Phoenix cemetery.
