Applegate residents heard the importance of Red Cross work discussed at the Applegate com munity hall Monday evening, when Dwight Houghton of Med ford and Ben Carpenter, first aid and life saving representa tive of the Red Cross, spoke on the subject. Mr. Carpenter is conducting a swimming class in Medford this week. Both speakers stressed im portance of every man, woman and child, having a membership in the Red Cross. Fifty cents of each membership is contributed to the national organization, while the remainder of the fee is retained in the Jackson coun ty chapter, Mr. Carpenter point ed out. The Red Cross is the most unexploited organization in the world, it was said, although it is continually giving i aid to those in need. (Spl) Mrs. Ruth Drysdale, chil dren's librarian at the Medford public library, addressed the meeting of the Applegate teacher-study group held at Ruch Friday. Mrs. Drysdale spoke on "Book Week," Novem ber 1218th. Miss Vera Humphrey of Med ford also spoke to the group in regard to organizing a Junior Red Cross in the local schools during the roll call drive this month. Miss -Humphrey stimu lated much interest in this pro ject, and Junior Red Cross chairmen will be appointed soon in each district. Mrs. Ina Purccl, primary teacher at Ruch-Sterling, pre sided at the meeting Friday, when use of pictures in reading was discussed by Mrs. Leora Pease, primary teacher at Ap plegate. Miss May Bonham of Uniontown. An excellent program of study has been arranged for the coming months. The next meet ing will be held December 8th, when Edith Bork of the South era Oregon College of Education will speak on remedial reading. Destroyer Launched Quincy, Mass., Nov. 16. (!') The nation's newest destroyer, named in the honor of the late Admiral William S. Benson and christened by his widow, slid down the ways today at the Bethlehem shipbuilding plant. Ex-Lawmaker Dies Portland, Nov. 16. (IP) Os car W. Home, 71, Republican representative at the 1915 and 1019 legislatures at the 1920 special session, died at his home here today. "Last year. STORE SOUTH OF ROSEBURG READY FOR TRAFFIC Roseburg, Ore., Nov. 16. UP) A portion of the new highway grade and pavement immediately south of Roseburg will be opened to traffic to day it was announced at the local division office of the stale highway department. The west half of the 22-foot pavement and a 7-foot shoul der will be used for a distance of 2,000 feet south from the city limits, while a connection is being made on the cast half pavement at the city limits, where the road is tapered from the standard highway width of 22 feet to meet the 40-foot street pavement. The entire two-mile section of new grade and pavement be tween Roseburg and Shady Point, it is announced, prob ably will be open to general traffic in about two weeks. The new section of highway will eliminate all sharp curves and steep grades immediately ,-oiith of Roseburg and will pro vide a standard highway for a distance of more than five miles, as it connects with the section previously built be tween Shady Point and Kel ley's Korner, Legion Head Whacks Kuhn and Browder Indianapolis, Nov. 16. (P) Raymond J. Kelly, national com mander of the American Legion, chose his 45th birthday today to denounce . Earl Browder . and Fritz Kuhn, respective heads of the communist and nazi organi zations in the United States, for "hiding behind masks of Ameri can citizenship." "Behind the masks of Amer ican citizenship, Fritz Kuhn and Earl Browder follow their re spective foreign masters, Hitler and Stalin," Kelly declared in a statement.
