OREGON, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 1939. 2.500.000 VISIT CASCADE BUILDING DURING FAIR RUN Wonderland Exhibit Seen by 7 23.9 Per Cent of All Who Visited Exposition Treasure Island, Nov. 2. (Spl) A total of two and a half million had visited the Shasta Cascade building when the Golden Gate exposition closed its gates Sunday night, far ex ceeding estimates made before the fair opened. The visitors came from every state in the union and 44 foreign countries. "The California commission is grateful to the Shasta-Cascade counties for this really outstand ing and entertaining demonstra tion of northern California and southern Oregon wonderland region," said Commissioner J. C. Berendsen as he made a final call on the manager. Vlilted 100 Timet "This makes just an even 100 happy visits to the Shasta-Cascade building," commented Mrs. F. H. Coon of 8 Jordan avenue, San Francisco, as she stopped to thank Mrs. May Williams, hostess. Continuing she said, "This was the finest, most hos pitable and soul satisfying ex hibit on Treasure island. I shall miss it." Final attendance figures at the building were 2,492,178, which was 23.9 percent of the total attendance at the fair. Some 30,000 of these came from the nine counties of the Won derland and 26 percent were from places outside of the states of California and Oregon. Wonderland court, always popular with visitors, was the scene of many gala occasions participated in by governors of other states, high government officials, noted bands, universi ties and colleges, lost none of its popularity as thousands crowded it to capacity to watch the last camp fire. Quail Loath To Leave When August Bade, game manager, came to pick up the beautiful pheasants, partridges, quail and ducks, a flock of 25 quail hid and could not be found. EX-MOVIE USHER WITH WEALTH GIFT Man Who Befriended Aged Lady Inherits Half Mil lion; Travels Continually New York, Nov. 2. (AP) If I had just 15 cents in my pocket, and somebody died and left me a half million . . . William J. Reilly. 40, a foi mer Roxy theater usher, knew what he'd Jo if that wishing well dream ever came true for him. It did come true. And to day, a year later, he's still doing what he wanted to do when the windfall came out of a clear sky. "Just keep traveling," ho said, as he stepped down the gang plank of the giant liner Santa Elena, bronzed by his fourth West Indies cruise since he in herited more than $500,000 in September, 1938, from Mrs. Edna Morse Elliott, who took that way of thanking him for his "kindly and courteous acts." Thought Her Poor. "I thought she was poor," he said. "I met her in 1927 and she attended the Roxy theater every week. I used to talk with her a little and make sure she had the seat she wanted. Some times I took her backstage. "But I didn't know she had any money. I thought she was living on a pension." Reilly said he left the Roxy theater in 1932 and then work ed as manager for Warner Broth ers picture theaters in the mid dle west for several years. "Then I lost that job. I was broke and took a job as store keeper in the Bronx veterans' hospital. In the meantime, I'd forgotten all about Mrs. Elliott, but her lawyers kept track of me and knew where I was all the time. Down io 15 Cents. "The day I heard the big news, I had 15 cents in my pockets. I couldn't believe it." He has been getting about $3,000 a month from the estate since Mrs. Elliott died. "I came back to see the Army Notre Dame football game," he said. "Then I'm off on another cruise. That's my idea of a real life. Keep traveling." WiiTAIIVES SMART AS I ARE, IS PROFESSOR'S BELIEF Los Angeles, Nov. 2. (AP) After living for more than a year with the aborigines of Aus tralia, the largest group of prim itives in the world. Dr. D. S. Davidson, anthropology profes sor of the University of Penn sylvania, concluded they are as intelligent as modern Ameri cans. "They have adjusted them selves to their environment as intelligently sometimes I think more intelligently than we have to ours." says Dr. David son, returning from an expedi tion with the American Philo sophical society and the Car negie corporation of New York He says great intelligence and knowledge Is required for "our contemporary ancestors," as the aborigines have been called, to survive the rigors of western Australia's vast, wild stretches, where game and water are scarce. Civilization, too, is pressing in on them. "Scarcity of lood has required a bnlancc between population and food supply," Dr. Davidson explains, "and those people hove met it by various forms of eu genic control. In times of great stress they kill their own chil dren. This, so shocking to us, does not disturb them. They do not kill the old because they are valuable to the community in Imparting knowledge to the young." Missing Student Safe in Arizona Eugene. Ore., Nov. 2 (PI Charles Cox. Heppner, who dis appeared last week after sup posedly starting for home, is in Bisbee. Ariz., it was revealed here yesterday. The University of Oregon stu dent sent his parents a postcard from the southern city saying he was traveling with another man and would be home in about a week. French Get Medals Paris, Nov. 2. (PI France published today the first list of her soldiers awarded Croix de Guere medals and Legion if Honor decorations for "remark able heroism and great cool ness" in the present war with Germany. Twenty soldiors were decorated, of whom 15 wore I seriously wounded. 1840 BUDGET ESTIMATE JACKSON COUNTY Pursuant to the provision of Sec tlon a.
