PAGE SEVEN iuiSfi MOT ONLY THRILL Somewhat overshadowed by that Belcastro-Schulz main event with no referee and no time limit are the first two matches on Promoter Mack Lil lard's weekly wrestling card in the armory Monday night. How ever, if it weren't for the fact that Pete and the German are figured to stage a history-making brawl, thus drawing most of the pre-program attention from grappling fans, either one of the two other bouts would be pulling their share of client comment. On any other card but this. Cowboy Dude Chick versus El Pulpo would be main event stuff. So would King Kong Clay ton versus Duke Pettigrove. As it is, though, both these matches have been relegated to minor roles to make way for the gi anic grudge brawl between Weed's Mad Italian and the un defeated Nazi meanie. Fans may see a spectacular duel between a pair of "sudden death" holds when Chick and El Pulpo come together in the middle event. Chick relies to a great extent on his lariat, or air plane, spin, while El Pulpo boasts almost as potent a man euver in his octopus clamp. Both boys are clean and scien tific matmen and the match is expected to be a glittering ex hibition of plain and fancy wrestling as it was practiced in the good old days. One of the game's most col orful and capable grapplers will make his first appearance here when King Kong Clayton climbs through the ropes, against Petti grove in the opener. Clayton, a 200-pound colored boy from Birmingham, Ala., has electri fied audiences in all the na tion's large grappling centers. He is strictly a "straight1' man, but he is so good that he usually outdraws the villains wherever he does his work. J VILLE LEADS IN WHAN FOOTBALL Six-Man League Standings W. L. Pet. In the other loop encounter, Gold Hill beat Phoe nix, 8 to 6, at Phoenix. Pearce scored two touch downs for Jacksonville, one of them on a 60-yard run after he Intercepted a forward pass, and Rians also tallied twice for the winners, once on a 45-yard run from scrimmage. Boyd scored the other Jacksonville touch down. Talent's touchdowns came in the first and final quarters, the first on a. lateral pass play from Skeeters to Glime that gained 50 yards and the second on a forward pass from Skeeters to Seaman. Next Friday's games send Jacksonville to Gold Hill and Talent to Phoenix. On Thanks giving Day, Jacksonville will entertain Drain, Douglas county champs. Oregon Frosh Bow To Washington Babes Eugene. Ore., Oct. 28 University of Washington's Frosh footballers dumped the University of Oregon Ducklings 19 0 Friday nipht but an Ore ironian, Pete Susick of North Bend, was their star. Susick scored the first Husky touchdown in the second quarter from the three yard line after throwing a 52 yard pass to Half back Dwight Smith. A few min utes later Friedman, Guard, in torcepted a Duckling pass and ran to the Oregon 25 from where Susick punched the ball to the five and passed to Pomianek for thp score. Falk kicked the point. W) The admiralty gave total British merchant shipping losses to noon today as 51 ships totaling 210,021 tons and neutral losses as 29 ships totaling 72,000 tons, (A German high command communique today asserted Germany had caused total losses since the beginning of the war of 115 ships, totaling 475,321 tons). These figures did not include the British aircraft carrier Cour ageous and battleship Royal Oak. It also was stated there had been a few French merchant man losses of undetermined tonnage. Statements by Winston Churchill, first lord of the ad miralty, on October 17, and by Prime Minister Chamberlain last Thursday indicated German merchant losses were placed at 62,000 tons. In addition, Bri tain seized 386,000 tons of con traband. Tommy Ryan Dies Portland. Oct. 28 P) Noah P. Smith, 68, who made the ring name of Tommy Ryan famous died yesterday. Ariz., Oct. 28 An armless woman who gave the name of Mrs. Ruth Mathews, Oklahoma City, a hitchhiker, cave birth to a baby girl at 3 am. today while lying beside the highway in near freezing temperature. Sheriff Emert Kempton, who brought the mother and baby to a hospital here, said Mrs Mathews was lying "on the cold, wet, ground, without bedding and with very little clothing." when the baby came. At the hospital an attendant said the mother and baby were "doing splendidly you would- n t know but what the baby was born in the hospital." PORItlrMLD FOR MONEY RUSE Portland, Oct. 28. (Tl O. F. Olson, 53. assistant tickot agent for the Northern Pacific Terminal company, was arrested by federal bureau of investiga tion agents today on a charge of attempting to obtain $300 in currency in exchange for 288 iron slugs and $12 in silver at the First National bank last Tuesday. The attempt failed when the teller discovered the "money rolls" contained slugs. Olson waived preliminary hearing before U. S. Commis sioner Kenneth Frazer and was bound to the federal grand jury. He was released on $2000 bond. FAIR HELPS, ALSO Spokane. Wash., Oct. 28. (IP) Lee Jacobi, publicity di rector for the Seattle Chamber of Commerce, said today travel in the Pacific northwest was "both helped and hindered" by the San Francisco Golden Gate exposition. Jacobi and other delegates to the Pacific Northwest Touri3t association, which closed its two-day meeting today, said an increase was noted in the num bers of tourists, but believed there would be a loss Or very little gain in the amount of money spent, in comparison to past years'. PRICE OF WHEAT Chicago, Oct. 28 (fP) New gains of more than a cent a bush el today shot wheat prices up to the best levels in a month and to within 3 to 5 cents of the war boom peaks early in September. Purchasing based on a con tinuation of dry weather in ma jor wheat producing regions of the southwest largely was re sponsible for the upturn. It said "a motion was passed endorsing and supporting the policies of President Roose velt and Democratic administra tion and commending Honorable James A. Farley, Democratic national chairman, for his out standing leadership." The chairman of the group was directed to call the mem bership together again before the next Democratic national convention. TATF Hcppner, Ore,, Oct. 28. lP) Claude Cox, father of Charles Cox, missing 21-year old Uni versity of Oregon student, dis closed tonight he believed the youth was at or en route to San Francisco to see the fair. The elder Cox, who is ill, said his son, called home by his illness from Eugene Monday, took the family car and drove away. He later appeared on the campus to pick up luggage and departed, friends presumed, for Heppner. The father said he did not think the youth had become lost but expressed some fear of foul play. (AP) Despite indications of an imminent Ger man offensive on the western front, the French government published an order today which was expected to release 100,000 men from war service. The order provided that many older men and those of any age who have four or more children may return to their homes. (AP) Taciturn Roger Cunningham, whose graying hair belies his 34 years, must die in the electric chair for strangling his pretty, socially prominent wife and burying her body In a sewer ditch last March. The verdict was reached In seven hours last night by a Jury which had listened to five days of testimony, much of which sought to prove the former fed eral housing inspector was in sane. Sitting alone in the county jail cell he has occupied since he confessed the slaying, the bespectacled prisoner offered no comment. His attorney was planning an appeal. TSHOT BY Honolulu, Oct. 28. (AP) The Honolulu Star-Bulletin to day published the first report of a wartime loss to British ship ping in the Pacific. The newspaper quoted a letter from William William, saying he was the survivor of the coastal ship Dolphin, which was sunk by mistake by British fort guns as she entered Lyttlcton harbor in South island, New Zealand. The story said the Dolphin was entering the harbor In day light when a fort gun was fired to warn the ship to identify her self.
