PAGE FIVE Rose Bowl Spotlight Swings From Webfoots to Beavers By Fred Hampson (Associated Press Writer) That misfortune at Eugene Saturday didn't eliminate the University of Oregon from the Rose Bowl ballot because the game wasn't in the Pacific coast conference, but it swung the spotlight from the Webfoots to the Oregon State college Beavers. The Orangemen, who looked too shaky after bad showings against Idaho and Portland U. to be mentioned in the same breath with the Rose Bowl, appeared the northwest's chief hope this week. Beating the University of I Washington scarcely puts the Orange in a class by itself but its more of a feat than the lieve. The Huskies have dis played plenty of power and passing finnesse right along and records would lead you to be-' only their goal line ineptness kept them from winning. Against Washington the Beavers acquitted themselves with hon ors, got over a dangerous hump of the schedule without injury and took undisputed conference leadership. If this October Rose Bowl talk must continue, it'll center around the Corvallis team for awhile. Disregard Zag Win Oregon's loss to the Zags is being glibly disregarded so far as the Pasadena prospect goes but it may turn out to be dam aging. Prestige is a precious commodity when the post season team is picked, particularly in cases of a conference champion ship tie, which is not unlikely this year. A loss to Gonzaga is no help to a conference team's prestige. They can lift themselves back into the beam next Saturday if they can flop UCLA at Los Angeles, a job that looks tougher by the hour. But then the Ducks seem to be keyed to the tough ones this year. Prix Grid Story Eugene scribes who accom panied Oregon to California a week ago brought back the prize football story of the week. Fullback Standlec of Stanford eluded all five of UCLA's col ored players on a punt return, finally reached the safety man, who was white, and niftied: "Dr. Livingston, I presume. ' Babe Hollingbery of Washing ton State was quoted as saying after his team lost to USC three weeks ago: "Howard Jones has three jf .lie four best teams in the coun try." WEBFOOTS DRILL FOR UCLA CLASH Eugene. Ocv. 4. (AP) With all varsity regulars except Stren strom, full back, in uniform, Oregon began preparation for its Coast conference game against U.C.L.A. at Los Angeles Saturday with a two-hour scrim mage Monday. Strenstrnm, nursing a bniised leg, took the day off. Oliver advised the team to "forget Gonzaga" and concen trate on the Bruins. Gonzaga ended Oregon's winning streak, 12-7, Saturday. Oliver put Buck Berry at left half in place of Bob Smith. The team probably will en train for Los Angeles Wednes day night. THREE IN FIGHT FOR O.S.C. HALFBACK POST Corvallis, Oct. 24. (AP) A scrap between Vic Kohler. Bob Olson and Bob Dcthman for left halfback position on Oregon State's unbeated, untied Pacific Coast conference eleven, marked the Beaver's preparations yes terday for next Saturday's game here against W.S.C. The Beavers survived last Sat urday's 13-7 win over Washing ton without injury. MARUYAMA FINALIST IN LINFIELD NET TOURNEY Linfield College. McMinnville, Ore., Oct. 24. (Spl.) Yoshio Maniyama, son of Masuzo Maru yama of Medford, was a finalist in the Anderson trophy tennis tourney that determined the racquet leaders in Linfield's tennis luminaries. Maruyama defeated three upper class letter- I men for the right to oppose Harold Philan.
