1 MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD. OREGON. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 18, 1939. PAGE THREE The Dead sea has become an important source of chemicals. John Adams, who died at 90, was the longest lived of the presidents. You never miss the water -for the ivell's NEVER dry POLLS, all the rage now-a-days, show the public is cheerfully unanimous about disagreeing. So, it's certain that if we conducted a poll on the greatest service performed by our service stations some would say "rest rooms," some "free air," and others a variety of things. The right answer is simply that they sell gasoline. Perhaps the greatest accomplishment of the oil industry has been mak ing it possible for millions of motorists to go millions of places with no more worry about fuel and lubricants than about the air they breathe. The other day one of our executives pulled in at a desert station. It was 75 miles to the next dot on the map. Naturally, other motorists thought noth ing about it, but our man asked where the gasoline came from. It was trucked in more than 500 miles. Yet that station never runs dry . . . come blizzards, sand storms or blazing desert tem peratures. The same thing is true of 408,000 other gasoline service outlets in the United States. Wherever you go, you can assume that stations will be there and that supplies will be on hand. That, messires, is Standard Oil Company of California M. M. DEPT. HOLTS CLAIM Southern tithern Democrat Says Only Reason for Congress Session Is to Aid Allies Washimtnn. Oct. 18 (AP Senator Holt (D.-W.Va.) charged in the senate today that Presi dent Roosevelt had pledged this country to aid England and France in an "attempt to slop the dictators by force." "The only reason we are in session and there is no use try ing to fool the people is to help England and France to beat Ger many." Holt shouted. as he pounded his de?k for emphasis. Holt agreed with Senator Hol- man (R.-Ore.) that if German sub marine attacks continued their recent successes thai con gress might be called into spe cial session again to revise neu trality laws to permit direct shipments to England and France. May Need New Change. The Oregon senator had in terrupted to observe Germany had scored some "remarkable successes" in the sinking of a British airplane carrier and a batleship. He suggested if Brit ain and France fail to have na val supremacy to obtain war supplies here, congress would be asked to change neutrality legis lation again. "In other words, should the one policy blow heat and blow cold as the tide of battle flows in Europe?" Holman asked Holt said he thought if the tide appeared to be turning to ward Germany, administration supporters would want congress to remain in session continu ously so the neutrality law could be changed on short notice, Agree on Change. A group of Democrats on the senate foreign relations commit tee agreed in principle on a plan to relax controversial ship ping provisions of the adminis tration's neutrality bill. The proposal, offered by Sena tor Connally (D.-Tex.) would authorize American vessels to carry all goods except arms to belligerent ports in South Amer ica, the Pacific ocean, the China sea, the Indian ocean the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian sea. Conally told reporters a final agreement had not been reach ed. A group of Democrats would work on details at an afternoon session, he said.
