ported tonight to have signed a pact
expected to prove another link in
the chain of diplomatic bargains by
which Ruaala Is extending her power
from the Baltic to the Black sen.
Unofficial but usually Informed
sources said that while the pact
would guarantee certain Russian
jrlghts In the Black sea and Its out
let, the Dardanelles, Its terms were
less sweeping than some the Russians

Official announcement of the ac
cord was expected almost hourly. It
was believed to clarify ' the relations
of Turkey and Russia In the light
Of their ties to participants In the

Chinese alrforces reported today that
three successful bombing rnlds on
Japanese airfield at Hankow today
destroyed "numerous Japanese air
planes and a munitions dump.
The raids, military sources said
were larger and more vigorous than
any carried out by the Chinese air-
force In 18 months.
Destruction of the munitions de
pot, the Chinese flyers reported,
rocked the entire Hankow area, start
ing huge fires. Japanese announce
ment said the raids killed 60 Chi
nese civilians.
On the last flight, the Chinese
aid they met 20 Japanese attv k
plane and In running dog fights
shot down three of the enemy and
lost two of their own ships.

el hanging on the barbed wire.
You could hear the clump of sol
diers feet In the rear and the soft
chuck-chuck of a shovel biting moist
earth. The Irish sergeant said:
"This Is It. sir, This where we
stand."
The front line Is not an exciting or
inspiring place. No sheila whine. No
machine-guns chatter. For a month
now men have been working this line
built by the French and now leln
forced by the British.
They will not say that all things
are ready, but they will say: "Here's
where we stand and old Frit will
have to be damned good to push
us back."
I peered through a periscope In
the blockhouse. Ahead, past the
barbed wire which caught the feeble
glint of the sun. there was nothing
but grass and trees. Off to the left a
cow munched solemnly. Ovrrhead
larks flew by singing bravely. Inside
the reinforced concrete which ctn
stand a heavy shell, the place
smelled cleanly of oil and grease on
the guns.
All things point toward the front.

fished placidly a few feet away.

comes through here we'll give him

solution of Soviet Russia's demands
and Indicated that a compromise

The predictions allayed to con
siderable extent apprehensions which '
developed last night when it was
revealed that Finland's special nego

Finland, according to political re
ports here, la agreeable to the sur
render of three small Islands at the
eastern end of the Gulf of Finland
to Russia since they are of little
value to Finland but are of strategic
military importance for the defense
of Leningrad and the Soviet Kron
stadt naval base.
A reported Russian demand for
permanent demilitarization of the
Aaland Islands, at the entrance to
the Gulf of Bothnia between Fin
land and Sweden, was not looked
upon as a serious obstacle.
Immediately after disclosure that

that a divergence of opinion had de

off a long-distance telephone conver
sation In mid-career, a shot tonight
ended the life of a man giving the
name of Ernest W. Dolsen, Yakima,
in a Seattle hotel room.
A telephone operator, cutting tn
on a conversation between Dolsen
and a man believed to be his brother-in-law,
H. A. Gtllespte. Yakima, heard
the shot Interrupt the call. A bellboy
who climbed a transom Into Dolsen'a
locked room discovered him shot to
death.
Beside the body was an enigmatic
note to his wife, which read in part:
"I read in the peper to day where
the cashier In a bank In Seattle
was given 15 year for embezzlement
for which they charged me with.
I know and I think you know I
have never taken a dime from any
one. This makes It tprrible hard for
me to get a. Job again. I think
that If they sent me to Walla Walla
It would be harder on you than this
way."
The man was about 40.
