The Huston brothers of Califor
nia are here visiting the Howell
brothers of tho Gold Hill Placers,
and are also looking the country
over for mining grounds, having re
cently sold their mining plant and
ground ln California. If they find
a suitable location, they expect to
build another plant.
Mr. and Mrs. John Wilde and
Wanda Mae of Granta Pass visited
this week with her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. R. W. Dusenberry.

The county road grader has been
doing some much needed grading
the road this week. The resi
dents of this road district have
sent ln a petition to the county
court to have the road graveled and

Mr. and Mrs. W. H. McDanlel ac
companied their son, Glenn McDanlel
of Medford, to Eugene over the week
end. Miss Eleanor Mee, upper grade stu
dent st the Applegate school,, was
absent from school far a short time
this week on account of Illness.
Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Breceda and
the la t tor's grandson, Howard Kubli,
have returned to Marshfleld after
spending a week with friends and
relatives on the Applegate. They also
visited Mrs. Breceda 's sister at Hilt.
On their Journey here the group
met wltn an accident near Oraves
creek ln which their automobile
turned over, although nobody was
Injured. The accident occurred when
some part of the machinery broke,
and Mr. Breceda was obliged to pur
chase a new car at Grants Pass.

Last week's storm and cold snap,
which deposited about two Inches
of snow on Dutchman's peak,
brought permanent release of all
lookouts and flreguarda In the em
ployment of the forest service. How
ever, as a safeguard against spread
of fire ln the warm dry period which
has followed, Jack Crump, employed
at the Star ranger station during
the summer, was sent to Tallowbox
lookout this week.
Upper Applegate telephone line
were out of commission for a short
time last week when one of the 13
foot polca was broken off when
struck by a CCC truck rounding
sharp curve after night. The truck,
which also tore out an adjoining
section of wire fencing, was not
damnged.
Albert Young, who acted as a guide
for a local hiking party going te
Whiskey peak Wednesday, has at
tained tho distinction of driving
closer to the peak than any other
motorist. Mr. Young gained an extra
half mile by driving through the
Mark Winning ham premises and
taking off over a sled track, thus
leaving his mountaineers only five
miles of hiking.
The first meeting of the parent
education series scheduled for the
winter ln the Applegate extension
unit will be held at Applegate school
building October 18 at 1:30 p. ra.
Mrs. John Black Is chairman of the
study group, and Mrs. Helen Davis
and Mrs. Audrey Crenshaw have been
appointed leaders. These study club
meettnga will be held on the third
Wednesday of each month through
out the winter, and will supplement
the project meetlnga held on the
first Wednesdays. The first project
