Several Motor to Football Game A number of valley folks traveled up to Portland for the week-end to attend the University of Oregon Stanford football game played yester day. Magnolia Tree to Be Dedicated at Wednesday Service ' The beautiful old magnolia tree that stands on the Jackson county courthouse grounds will be dedlcntcd In a ceremony Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock. The public Is Invited to attend the services. Senator A. Evan Rcames will give a short address as presentation la made to the county court. Dedication ceremony Is sponsored by the MedfDi'd Oarden club. The tree originally stood on the grounds of the E. B. Plckel home on West Main street which Is the present site of the Richfield servlc station. It was moved several years ago to the courthouse grounds and was given to the county by Mrs. Plckel In memory of her husband, the late Dr. Plckel. Kafferty waa compli mented at a combination shower and card party Wednesday evening at the home of Mrs. John Elson on Laurel street. The honoree received an abundance of lovely gifts. Bridge was enjoyed throughout the evening with prizes being won by Mrs. Andrew Hnnnu, Mrs. Louis DuRoos and Mrs. Harold Gould. Mrs. Arvard Fried land won the prlzo in a guessing game. Refreshments were served at a table prettily centered with orchid and purple shades of asters and white tapers with smalt golden wedding bells. The bells were given to the guests as favors. Numerous Social Affairs Honor The Boyle Briggs Mr. and Mrs. Coy la Briggs of Fresno, Calif., have been the inspira tion for a round of gay social activi ties In Medford the past week. The popular former Medford residents are spending their vacation here. Last week the Roy Harpers were hosts for a dinner dance at which the Briggs were among honored out-of-town guests. On Thursday evening Dr. and Mrs. B. L. Lageson, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Porter and Dr. and Mrs. Edwin R. Durno were hosts for a dinner party at the Porter home on Minnesota avenue. Bidden to the affair were thirty-six guests who gathered first at the Lagcaons' residence on Glenn Oak court. Also to fete the visiting couple Mr. and Mrs. Maxwell Pelrce entertained last evening with a cocktail affair at the University club. Later a no-host dinner and dancing party took place at the Chateau. Thlrt-flve guests attended. The Crater Lake avenue home of the J. Prank Relnharts was the scene of a pleasant luncheon and bridge party Friday afternoon when Mrs. Re In hart and Mra. Robert Norrls en tertained for Mrs. Briggs. The guest list numbered eighteen. During the middle part of the week, the Briggs spent several days at the summer home of Mr. and Mrs. T. E. Daniels. Johnson Home Is Scene of Meeting The Travel Study club met lost week, at the home of Mrs. R. R. Johnson, 10 Keene Way. Venezuela was the study for the day with Mrs. Lillian Lourwberry giving a most In teresting historical background as well as present day customs, re-! soxirces and government. j "Venezuela", a very recent book by i Erna Ferguson, telling of the author's visit to various cities and her travel up the Orinoco, was reviewed to make the picture of that country more vivid. Mrs. Everett Faber reviewed "The Jungle Book" by Dr. Herbert Spencer Dickey who, for thirty years, has been company physician for various com mercial enterprises In South America. Many amusing and some harrowing experiences were recounted In his book, but with It all the Jungle holds a fascination for him that takes him back, time 'after time. The next meeting will be held November 6 at the home of Mrs. A. J. Hanby and the study will be Cen tral America, with Mrs. J. W. Hoyt and Mrs. Janet Ouches on the pro gram. Dinner Meeting Enjoyed by B.P.W. The Medford Business and Pro fessional Women's club held their regular dinner meeting Thursday evening in the Hotel Holland. Eliza- zeth McGalllard, first vice president. presided. Mrs. Margaret Huson, Mrs. Jean McAllister and Mrs. Catherine Wcndt accompanied by Mrs. Eva H. Marsh, sang "Bend of the River" and 'Take Joy Home." Miss Anne Avery of Portland was honor guest. Mis Avery is publicity chairman of the Oregon Federation of Business and Professional Wo men's club. She gave a short talk on the importance of the Medford club members to attend the dis trict conference of B.P.W. to be held In Klamath Falls October 7 and 8. Mrs. Mabel Mack gave o short talk on "What The Federation Means To Me." I Legion Auxiliary Dinner Wednesday The American Legion Auxiliary will start their fall activities with a Joint dinner at the Medford armory on Oct. 11th at 7 o'clock, for all Legion and auxiliary members. Mrs. Grace Holmes, chairman, wishes all reserva tions phoned her at 444 or U04-Y at an early date. Following the dinner the auxiliary will hold their reeular business meeting. Jr., of Pitts burg Is of much interest to residents of this valley. The betrothal was made known at a luncheon given by the bride-elect's mother. Mr. Preston la the son of Frank C. Preston of the Applegate district and of Mrs. C. N. Black of San Francisco, Cal. He attended the Tamalplas school and later obtained his educa tion In Chicago and the University of Pennsylvania. At present he is associated with the Halsey -Stuart Bonding company In Pittsburg. No definite date has been set for the wedding. Bate mans Feted On Wedding Anniversary Date Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Taylor were hosts for a dinner party Thursday honoring Mrs. Tsyior'a parents, Mr, and Mrs. Samuel Bate man whoso 47th wedding anniversary was the occasion for the celebration. McKee, Mrs. Elmer Hayes, Mrs. Sid Brown and Mrs. T. Lednicky, Mrs. Mary Weston and Mrs. A. B. Bauman. Pupils of St. Mary's high school in trim blue and white uniform' assisted with the serving. Eusebe A. Dallaire furnished several seml-classlcal musical num bers during the luncheon. Guests were received by Mrs. J. C. Mrs. Ed ward Carlon, entertained at her home on Kings highway. The betrothal was revealed when each guest received a cleverly decor oted match folder entitled "It's a Match." The inside cover announced November 19 as the wedding date. CarroUJ acobs Wedding Service Recent Event Mrs. Mabel Carrol, daughter of Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Northrup of Portland and George W. Jacobs of Gold Hill were married September 30 at the home of Edith Lynda 11 Jacobs by the Rev. Darlow fl. John son of Grants Pass. The bride wore a white lace gown with a gardenia corsage. Mrs. Donald Gay, the bridesmaid, wore blue silk and a corsage of pink rosebuds. Donald Oay acted as best man for Mr. Jacobs. The mother of the bride was dressed In a black lace ensemble. The bridegroom's sister wore a pale gray lace ensemble and corsage of pink rosebuds. Assisting at the reception were Mrs. Winfleld Bailey of Medford, Mns. Harry B. Ellsworth of Grants Pass and Edith Lyndall Jacobs of Gold Hill. The couple Is now at home at Delta Farm near Gold Hill. The affair la sponsored by the Parent Teachers association of the school. A similar entertainment held last year waa one of the most enjovable affairs of the school year and brought out a capacity crowd of parents and guests. It Is anticipated that this year'g event will be Just as enjoyable and successful. Each parent will be given his child's school schedule to follow from room to room. A teacher will explain subjects taught during this particu lar period. The Instructors will also answer all parents' questions pertain ing to school work and in other ways give the visitors an Insight Into dally school routine. -4 The cafeteria will be opened and refreshments will be served during the "lunch-time." A "tardy bell" will ring at 8 o'clock and the Bulldogs will be on hand to keep the parents from wandering around lost In the halls. Mrs. Warner Talks At Garden Meeting The home of Mrs. F. G. Mrs. Howard Bawdeti presided at a tea table which wii attractively appointed. Col. W. H. Paine spoke concerning the proposed park site bordering Beai creek and Mrs. W. J. Warner gave a very Interesting resume of the War ners' trip to the east this summer. She told of the gladioli shows held In Indiana, New England and Florida where Mr. Warner acted as one ofH the official Judges.
