(AP) A war emerge ncy woul d n o w fl n d the United States with adequate supplies of moat vital raw materials. Indus trial steel sources said today. Last February, Tom Gtrdler. chair man, - Republic Steel corporation, said: "Down In Kentucky burled In deep underground vaults we have stored away a vast pile of gold. The time might come when we would gladly give all of that gold for a pile of desperately needed manganese chromium." This warning, and others from in dustrialists, similar warnings from President Roosevelt and government officials, were given In time so that the United States Is now believed to have at least a year's emergency store of essential Imported Ingredi ents used In steel making, these sources said. Huge Sum Authorised Spurred by warnings, new federal legislation authorized expenditure tn four years of 4100.000,000 for vital war supplies. The first allotment of $10,000,000 of this fund was made available for spending this year for stores of four commodities mangan ese, chromium, tin and tungsten. Manganese Is used today to de oxidize steel, thus aiding In produc ing a clean metal, and for Its "tough ening" effect. Thus It was a neces sary In abrasion-resisting steel for moveable, wearing parts of machin ery. Principal high-grade manganese deposits art In India, Africa, Russia and Brazil. There are also deposits In Cuba, the western "copper country," and tn Virginia, Georgia, and Alabama. In Cuba a unique plant has made low grade deposits there available for United States consumption, by devel opment of the "flotation process" on s commercial scale. Since only a small body of water would have to be policed by the navy, this supply Is considered practically a domestic supply. Manganese At Home In the United States the deposits of manganese are low-grade orea, but rising prices, trade sources said, would probably stlmufate production. Tungsten Is used for high' speed tools, bulb filaments, chemicals, and tanning of white leather. The first use Is the Important strategic one. Principal world sources are In China, with deposits In British Ma laya and In the United States. High prices In 1037 brought out biggest domestlo production since the world war. Production areas are In Nevada principally; also Arizona, California. Colorado, Idaho, Missouri, Montana. New Mexico, Utah and Washington.
