Medford Publicized An article In the Jewelers' Circular-Keystone for September describes Oregon as "the fisherman's paradise," tells of Med ford's annual national catfich derby and speaks of the crowds attracted by this yearly event. The article was written by Larry Schade, Medford : Jeweler who donated the principal trophy for the 1939 catfish derby. The magazine Is the largest trade Journal In the Jewelry business. . Recruiting Aide Ernest A. Roesel. a chief machinists mate of the U. 8. navy, arrived here by motorcar from Portland yesterday afternoon to assist George E. Patterson, a chief quarter master, in conducting the navy's re cruiting sub-station in the Medford federal building. Mr. Roesel has been on recruiting duty at the district's main station In Portland for the past year. Because of Increases In re cruiting recently he was assigned to assist Mr. Patterson here. Navy Films George E. Patterson, In charge of the U. S. navy recruiting station here, announced today that a truck containing a library of navy motion pictures will arrive In Med ford about October 18 for a three weeks' stay. During that time navy men will present motion picture pro tram before organized groups such as lodges, granges and service clubs when ever invited, Mr. Patterson said, Organizations desiring to see the pictures were asked to notify Mr. Patterson. Celebration First anniversary of its new hall at 42 North Front street will be oeleDrated by Crater Lake airie of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Thursday evening, it waa announced today by Henry Ruch, chairman of the board of trustees. A regular weekly meeting will be held at S p. m. and after the business session there will be entertainment and "lemon" dance. Refreshments will be served during the evening. The aux lllary will Join the aerie in celebrat ing the anniversary after ita regular meeting. The evening's program Is in eharge of William Peck, chairman of the entertainment committee. It Is expected that a large delegation of Eagtes will be present from Granta Pass. The lodge moved to Its new hall a year ago and since then number of Improvements have been made. At Wrestling Matches Among Ash land residents attending the wrestling matches in the Medford armory last night were Harry Chipman, P. D. Mc Dougall, Allen Autry and Othel Lee. Coyote Bounty Jackson county will pay a bounty of $3 on coyotes during October, November and De cember, it was announced today by George Carter, county clerk. Condi tions of payment will be the same as those that prevailed until last March 15, Mr. Carter said. i Shoot Deer A trio of successful hunters returned last evening from eastern Oregon near Beatty, with three mule deer, the largest of which weighed about 200 pounds. In the group were Eugene Peterson. Otto Krueger and N. O. Nicholson, a visitor here from Portland. The hunters had been away since Friday. Arrested Roy D. Truex. 24, was arrested by federal authorities here today on an order from Michigan declaring him to be a parole violator. He was placed in county Jail pend lng further Instructions from fed eral authorities In Detroit. The au thorities here were Informed he had violated his parole by leaving the district without permission. He had served a year of a sentence of a year and three months when he was paroled but officials here were not informed of the crime he had been sentenced for. New Resiliences Sam D. Koehler applied at the city building Inspec tor's office yesterday for a permit to construct a new residence and private garage at 610 King street at a stated cost of (3750. Earl B. Bige low applied for a permit to build a new residence and garage at 16 North Hlllcrest road at a stated cost of $3000. O. S. Walden of 1014 East 11th street applied- for a permit to construct a private garage at a stated cost of $350. Hattle L. Rankin of 114 Genesee street applied for a per mit to build a porch at a stated cost of $125. Flying East- Four North American baste training planes en route to New York City were refueled at Medford municipal airport this morning. They were piloted by MaJ. Carlton Bond, regular army officer in command of the array air corps reserve station at Pearson field, Vancouver, Wn., Capt Pat Reynold, reserve pilot at Pearson field, Capt. C. P. Bradley, command ing the reserve unit at Boeing field, Seattle, Wash., and Capt. G. R. Tur ner, reserve officer. Three reserve of ficers were carried as passengers. The men were en route to a convention of reserve officers In New York. Plane Passenger? H. G. Kruger, whose destination was Portland boarded Monday evening's United Air Lines northbound Malnllner flagstop. C. F. Aarrasmlth got off the Monday evening southbound flagstop here from Portland as did Dr. and Mrs, Walt E. Hoppe, local residents who had been spending the week-end In Portland. H. G. Kruger was a pas senger getting off the Monday after noon northbound plane and R. H Parsons, owner of HUlcrest orchards here, was a passenger to Seattle. R, B. WEISS' P. RUES THURSDAY Abraham Philip Weiss, a native son of Oregon, born In Lane county. September IS, IBM, and a pioneer of Jackson ounty, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Cora Boussum, 616 Mary street, October 3, 1039. after a short illness. Although 85 years of age, Mr. Weiss waa active until the last. He came to Jackson county when he waa 30 years old and was united In marriage to Mlas Mary E. Hocker smlth, October 6, 1880. She preceded him in death six years ago. Mr. Weiss was a man of fine Chris tian character, beloved by all who knew him. He loved to tell about the early days In Medford aa he had seen the city grow from nothing to what It la today. He will be remem bered by all of hla friends for his genial character and neighbor. I ness. Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Weiss, four daughters surviving, Mrs. M. L. Daily and Mrs. Cora Bous sum. of Medford, Mrs. George M. Robinson, of Portland, and Mrs. H. J. Funke, of Bend, Ore. Two sons have passed away. He also leaves nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Funeral servcles will be conducted from the Perl Funeral home Thurs day at a p. m. Burial will take place In the family plot in the Medford I. O. O. F. cemetery. ON RADIO THEFT Harold Franklin Bailey, SI, of Medford pleaded guilty In circuit court this morning to a charge of burglary In a dwelling, after he waived preliminary hearing. Passing of sentence was postponed to to morrow by Judge H. D. Norton. Bailey's alleged accomplice in the theft and sale of a radio, George Walker Campbell, 33, of Medford, pleaded guilty in circuit court to a charge of possession of stolen prop erty and Judge Norton continued passing of sentence for a period of six months, pending Campbell's good behavior. Campbell, the court learned, had no previous record. Bailey confessed the theft of table radio- from the home of Chris tine Dlnsmore, 343 North Ivy street, while the occupants of the house were absent last week. Following the theft. Bailey turned the radio over to Campbell, ctty police stated, and the latter sold It to a local second hand store for S8. The money was then split between the two men, according to police, who lo cated the radio In the second hand store and subsequently arrested the two men. Associated Plans Football Meeting At Hotel Medford The annual Associated Football Sales Show will be held Wedneaday evening, October 4, at 7:30 p.m at the Hotel Medford In Medford. according to an announcement made today by C. I. Hays, local sales agent of the Tide Water Associated OH company. Dealers and members of the sales personnel of the company from Medford and vicinity will attend this pre -view of the 1939 football season. C. I. Hays will act as chairman of the meeting. Bill Wagner district sales supervisor of the Oregon dis trict, and Warner Wilson of the Lord te Thomas advertising agency will be the featured speakers. Not only will the dealers get first hand Information of the present football season, but a splendid mo tion picture, university of San Fran Cisco vs. St. Mary's of Texas foot ball game which opened the 1939 season on the Pacific coast, will be shown.
