Company A, 18Sth Infantry, Ctpt. Carl T. Tengwald announced today that a laat-mlnute drive would be staged to oomplete the enlistment quota of 29 new recruits by Saturday noon, the deadline under the war de partment's nation-wide recruiting campaign to Increase the National Ouard to peace-time strength of 336,000 men. Five recruits were signed up yes terday, Capt. Tengwald stated, bring ing the total number of new recruits since the campaign waa launched Monday to 13. exactly one-balf the local quota. The remaining 13, he emphasised, must be enrolled by noon tomorrow If Medford Is to fol low In the footsteps of Klamath Falls. Grants Fasa, Boseburg and Ashland guard units, all of which have reached their quota. American flags were hung on busi ness establishments today to call attention to the recruiting campaign, and veterans' organizations, clvlo and patriotic bodies sre cooperating to the fullest extent In aiding the local guard unit to reach Its quota. Cspt. Tengwald emphasized that residence In Medford waa not neces sary in order to apply for enlistment In tha company. Ha stated that any mala In Jackson county, between the age of 18 and 38, was eligible to Join, and pointed out that more than one half the present membership of Com pany A resided outside the city. Lari mer Is Employed at the Medford Gro ceteria and Robert L. Mcintosh la employed by Bateman and Bona, gravel contractors. Two other recruits haven't completed their examina tions. IS CITY REQUEST The elty superintendent' offloe today Issued a request to til Med ford property owners that they keep their trees trimmed to a height of at least 10 feet above sidewalks and streets, in accordance with a elty ordinance specifying this height as the minimum. It was explained that the elty street sweeper has been bothered oy low-hanging limbs, and complaints have also been received from pedes trians that limbs and branches of trees are too close over sidewalks. FOR RALLY BLAZE Fire Chief Roy Elliott today an nounced that the fire department will patrol the area surrounding the big bonfire at the Medford high school this evening prior to the Med-lord-Corvallls football game at 8:18. The chief appealed to residents liv ing in the vicinity of the high school not to get alarmed when they see the smoke snd flamea of the bonfire and not to call the fire department unless they actually have a fire. He also said that ample fire apparatus would be on hand at the rally location to take care of any emergency. By the Associated Press The sinking of three Norwegian freighters In the North Sea todav and yesterday raised the total num ber of known ships lost to 57 and the gross tonnage In losses to 338.- 905. The crew of the three ships were saved, previously neutral Norway had lost only one ship the Ronda which sank September 13 after striking a mine off the coast or Holland, 17 persons. Including two Americans, were lost in that disaster, The Takstaas, an 1,630 ton craft, loaded with wood pulp which the German regard as contraband, was torpedoed oft Marsteln on the Nor wegian coast early today. The crew got ashore In lifeboats. The 875-ton Jern. also carrying wood pulp, waa sunk by a submsrlne yesterday afternoon off Krlstlansand. The crew said the sub commander gave them 15 minutes to get Into their lifeboat before he fired a tor pedo. The Swedish steamer Caledonia picked up the crew and later trans ferred the men to a Norwegian coast patrol boat which put them ashore. The third ship, the 3,000-ton Salass, struck a mine In the North Sea. Its cargo was not disclosed.
