World War Effect on U. S. Is Told by Newspapermen NEW YORK (UP) An answer to the question, "what will happaa to the average American In event oi another world war?" Is otteraa by five newspapermen In a book just published. The authors emphatically agree i that personal restrictions In a future war would be so drastic that there oould be no comparison with those experienced in 1917-18. Actual con fiscation of wealth and property Is called "a distinct probability." Per sons having money would be forced to buy government bonds; they would b, told what to eat and how much, and civil liberties would be In a stata of "suspended anima tion." The book, "When War Comes' (Orayatone), Is edited by Larry Nixon, The authors are Elmer 0. Walter, United Press financial edl tor; O. Norman stabler, New Vork Herald - Tribune financial editor; Jack Poster, New York World-Telegram; W. W, Chaplin, Internation al News Service, and Maloolm Logan, New York Post. From their key positions, these newspapermen have drawn upon their experiences and their study of World war conditions to present blueprint of what the civilian may expect If another great con flict sweeps the world. They also outline the probable effect, on the individual In event of a general war which does not draw In the United States. COLORED SLIDES PEARS OF ISI SEATTLE. (Spl.) Twenty-five colored slides of table settings and dishes using' fall and winter pears ss the basis have Just been made In the office of the Oregon-Wash-Ington-Callfornla Pear Bureau here. . Miss Florence Montgomery, home economist and publicity director of the pear bureau, assisted by Mrs. William Alexander, formerly dietitian at the ofrlce of the pear bureau's advertising agency, prepared the tablo settings and dishes. Joe Yolo of Yakima, Wash., who made the nsw pear bureau moving picture, photo graphed the settings. The slid are to be used by the fleldmen whom the pear bureau has employed and who will begin their work this month. The slides will be a colorful addition to the bureau's roadshow, which Is the basis of the pear bureau's new program. Also, the slides will bs used for home economists and club women's meet ings. One of the slides depict, a myrtle wood bowl (from Oregon) filled with fruit apples, oranges, bananas and grapes, with peers predominating. This Is In line with one of the peer bureaus' new slogans: "Keep th, fam ily fruit bowl filled." A tle-ln was made with ham In a setting showing a platter containing a baked ham surrounded by pear halves filled with red berries, this making a colorful picture. A bam manufacturer has assured the pear bureau of cooperation In publicizing pear, with ham In hla own adver tlslng. Additional promotion of the use of fresh pears with meat, waa made In photographing pear, fried with pork chops and sausages. A tle-ln with some reciprocal pub licity of California member,, who emphaMza pears In their publicity, was one "still" mowing th, use of lemon Juice on cut pears to prevent discoloration. This cooperation was also utanded la a JJlctur, of a salad OCMRTMtNT Of MMCIJUURf WEIGHTS Ann MEASURES: t' They present carefuUy consider answers to what war's -affect will be on Jobs, salaries, property values, stocks, bonds, mortgages and In surance policies. These forecasts ara made: The draft In a real war will not recognize sex. A wife may bs forosd to accept service at the front as a nurse. Nationalization of labor Is Ukely In event of a lengthy war. Rents will rise; clothing will b. Inferior but will cost mora, and transportation will be restricted. Each man, woman and child will have registration paper, and will have to carry them at all tlmea. College, will become rush ordav West Points; primary education will be sharply curtailed. A new kind of bootlegger win arise one who sells forged cards, for food, for liquor, for a visit be yond a person's restricted district, and for other liberties granted only by special government permission. The concluding chapter Is devoted to what will happen after th wat ends. Demobilization of Industry an manpower la seen is leading S another worldwide depression. combining sections of grapefruit and oranges, together with pear segment.
