Applegate Fire Rogue River na
tional forest office here reported to
day that a fire started In the Apple
gate district about 3 o'clock yester
day afternoon. It Is believed that
the fire was caused by a careless
hunter. Location of the fire waa
about a half mile from the road near
Whiskey creek trail. It burned an
area of 100 by 40 feet In fir timber.
Nine men from CCC Camp Apple-
gate extinguished the fire which was
reported to be entirely out today.
Hunt Deer Fred Stevens, chemical
truck driver at the Medford fire de
partment, and P. C. Bigham left
thla morning on a deer hunting trip
to Horseshoe rim In eastern Oregon.
Mr. Stevens Is on his annual ten
day vacation.

vallls to attend Oregon State col
lege. This Is his first year at the
college and be Is registered In the
forestry school. He has been em
ployed at Crater Lake national park

Army Enlistment The enlistment
In the U. S. army of Ray M. Huron,
eon of Mrs. Ina Huson of 436 Main
street, for service with the coast
artillery corps in the Hawaiian Isl
ands, was announced today by Col.
G. T. Perkins, army recruiting of
ficer in San Francisco. Huson made
application for enlistment at the
Medford recruiting office on Sep
tember 9. and was formally enlisted
at Fort McDowell, Cal., on September
18. where he Is now awaiting the
sailing of the next army transport
to the islands. Huson was born,
reared and educated In Medford
graduating from the local high school
with the class of 1938.
Building Permits W. E. Thomas
applied at the city building Inspec
tor's office yesterday for a permit
to make an addition to a building
at 325 West Main street at a stated
cost of 8350. A. C. Hubbard ap
plied for a permit to construct a
stucco building at 129 North River
side avenue at a stated cost of $500.
Associated Oil company, 702 East
Main street, applied for a permit to
repair a roof at a stated cost of
$150. George Howard applied for a
permit to repair a roof at 1022 West
Fourth street at a stated cost of $50.
Medics Meet The Jackson County
Medical society held a regular meet
ing last evening In the Hotel Hol
land. Dr. Charle T. Sweeney was
host and Dr. W. H- Heckman pre
sented a very Interesting paper on
"Alcohol and Its Harmful Effects."
Guests present were Doctors Robert
W. Sleeter and O. J. Halboth. both
of Medford. Members from Ashland
were Doctors O. W. Gregg. Mattle
Shaw, B. A. and H. A. Woods. Twenty
eight attended.
