This has been
a great year In sports; 1939 should
be even greater In every respect.
Without further ado, here are our
prognostications for the new year,
and If we miss a couple it won't be
the first time:
Baseball They can't stop them
Yanks, who will blast their way to
another American league pennsnt
and whip the Cincinnati Reds, Ns
tlonal league champs. In the world
series. Nobody will bust Babe Ruth's
homer record of 60. although Green
berg will belt about 58 and Jimmy
Foxx around 50. Diswy Dean won't
be of much use to the Cubs, but
Brother Paul will make a great
comeback with the Cardinals; Lefty
Grove's arm trouble will still trouble
him, snd he won't win over 1 0
games for the Red Sox. Cart Hub
bell will have another, good year
with the "Jints." Cleveland will fold
again In the stretch, and so will
the Pirates. Clncy will nose out the
Cubs and Giants for the bunting
In the National, thanks to Vander
Meer. who will pitch another no
httter. Freddy Hutchinson will go
great guns with the Detrolts: so
will Bob Feller with the Indians.
Lou Gehrig will resume his fence
wrecking and Joe DIMnggio and Joe
Gordon will help him plenty.
In the Paclflo Coast league,
Portland will grab the cham
pionship hern use they will have
some hltfTrs, at last, and have
released several clubhouse "law
yers." In the Southern Oregon
league, Medford's Craters will
repeat their riag-holsting cere
monies If they can find at least
one extra good pitcher. Grants
Pass will furnish the most ap
portion, and Ashland might not
he In the circuit. Same for
nlendale. Crescent City won't
have Koll. which Is too had.
Boxing Joo Louis will whip John
Henry Lewis next month and retain
his heavyweight title. Lou Nova will
wallop Maxie Baer and Tony Galento.
but won't, fight Louis until 1940.
Freddie Apostoll will finally become
the middleweight champion In all
states, Armstrong will lick Ambers
