"Up the River" Is the hilarious "screwball and chain gang" story of a mythical st e prison which boasts a radio In every I cell, gates that are practically revolv ing doors, and the best football team in the "Big Pen conference." Daffy? Yes, but those who have seen It are Its greatest boosters. Comedy Stars As the musical comedy star who sets out to have some fun Instead of trying to satisfy her parasitic rela tives. Irene Dunne finds a fun-loving companion in Doug Fairbanks Jr. in tho comedy hit, "Joy of Living." at the Roxy theatre for today nnd to morrow. Alice Brady. Guy Kibbec, Jean Dixon, Eric Blore, Lucille Ball and Wr.rren Hymer are also featured. "Valley of Giants" Technicolor Drama Craterians Treat The technicolor combination of Peter B. Kynes "Valley of the Giants" and Walt Disney's "Ferdin and the Bull." which opened their showings yesterday at the Craterlan theatre, should prove to be a pop ular one before the week's out. The keynote of Peter B. Kyne stories Is action and plenty of It. "Valley of the Giants." in the screen version, is no exception. Here it la offered in robust melodrama, set against the magnificent redwood for est country of northern California. A lumber story, premised on the engrossing theme of a young man's fight to prevent land graDoers irom annexing his and his neighbors' her itage, it gains added stature In Its filming, for it is action photographed In beautiful color. Wayne Morris, as heir to the lnrg est forest area In the redwood dis trict and the man the others look to as leader, gives a forthright por trayal. Claire Trevor, as the hostess In a gambling hall, also performs in convincing manner. For comedy there Is Frank McHugh, and for villainy, Charles Blckford. who need no ex planations of their abilities. Turning in a performance that Just about walks away with the hon ors though, Is Alan Hale. As a giant lumbormnn who likes nothing hot ter than a good fight, Hale Is per fect. When he swings Into action (which he does often), you just know something's going to pop! The genius that is Walt Disney's, so aptly demonstrated time and awln, has again touched the niche with "Ferdinand the Bull." It'll not only make a hit with those who have already read the story, but also these who haven't. Medford Lodge No. 103. AF.A.M.
