DECEMT5ER 14. 1938. 89 YOUNG RIDERS JOIN CYCLE CLUB IN SAFETY DRIVE A bicycle safety club was organized here last night by Crater Lake port of the Veteran of Foreijrn Wan with 80 boys and girls from seven to 17 years old participating. It la expected the club, with court for enforcement of traffic rules m a major adjunct, will be In full operation within a month. Officers were nominated lost night and the lection Is to be held at a meeting next week, exact time to be an nounced later. After organization has been completed the club Is to meet regularly twlco a month. Last night's organization meeting was held in the Jackson county courthouse auditorium and was In charge of William Cooney, chairman of the VJ.W. bicycle safety project. The following nominations were made: For president, Warren Hol brook, Robert Ruby, Bill Frederick. James Elliott, Neysa Wall, Chester Cos, Roy Russell and Marshall Wil liams. Vice-president:1 Vernon Jones, Irene Frank, Opal Bnrnhart, Susan Vilas, Donald Shirley, Jean Davis, Marian Loner, Wayne White, Keith Morse and Betty Wall. Secretary: Joan Franklin, Bess Reed, Dorothy Barnum, Catherine Barbra, Neym Wall, Susan Vilas, Bet ty Vincent, Vera Rays and Sam Toung. Additional nominations may be made before the election next week, Mr. Cooney anncu need . Nom 1 na tions ure to be made next week for Judge, grand counsel, defense counsel and captain. Lieutenants will be appointed by the captain. Selections made thus far of prize winners In the recent bicycle safety parade were announced as follows: Lylo Wilson, Jackson school; Tom my Chlciers, Lincoln school; Bud Cleland, Roonevclt echool; and Hart ley Blther, Lincoln school. Not all schools have reported, Mr. Cooney said. It la a unit of the widoly-known safe driving demon strauons sponsored by the Aetna Casualty and Surety Company of Hartford, Connecticut, waa developed by scientists at Vale University. The test proves that no person can act Instantly to atop his car when danger looms up ahead. He must first see the danger then transmit a stopping Impulse to the foot that operates the brake. The Interval during which the danger message Is flashing from eye to brain to foot la known as reaction time, and varies with the Individual from one-fourth of a second to a second or longer. During this Intervnl a car operating at a given speed will travel a surpris ing distance before It can be atopped. If the aubjeot finds that hla reaction time Is slower than the average motorist, It means that he should drive at a proportionately low er rate of apeed.
