The Best Way Out
rT0 paraphrase Shakespeare considerably:
"Nothing in l!fe ever became DeGnato Earl Mayer no well
as his leaving of it "
DeCasto Earl, on trial for the murder of James Eugene
Basse tt, killed himself, this saved the stijte from the painful
and expensive necessity of doing so.
It also proved, beyond all doubt, the guilt of the man and
his mother. There was no reasonable doubt before, as the
mother had confessed several months ago, implicating herself
and son, a confession that was absolutely convincing in every
detail. But, for some strange reason, confessions don't have
the standing before the law, they have in current literature, so
the state had to go to the trouble and expense of proving what
bad been admitted, and no reasonable person for a moment
doubted, had occurred.
Now we trust Mrs. Mary Eleanor Smith's attorney will have
the decency to withdraw the repudiation of her confession, and
the state will have the decency to ask that she be placed in a
nice, strong cell for the rest of her days, she being 73 they
shouldn't be too many.
As far as we could learn these two people had fallen about
as low, as the human biped can descend, in this vale of tears,
it's too bad that more of their kind, don't perceive as DeC'asto
did, that when the moral mercury falls to around 50 below
zero, it's to one's peace and self interest to close the house
and find another land.

Doesn't Look Promising
WE wish Secretary Hull all the luck in the world with his
attempt to form a Pan-American front against totalitarian
aggression from abroad. But we fear when practical results are
concerned he is going to have as serious difficulties with his
anti-Fascist pact to the south, as with his reciprocal trade
treaties to the east, which are also in this department's judg
ment as right as rain.
The trouble with the latter is the TIME element. With the j
totalitarian principle in the ascendant, with world powers to j
the cast and the west, whipping up hysterical support for self- !
sufficiency barter and a super nationalism, i tie principle 01
reciprocity, of appeasement, of give and take, is njoing to
have hard sledding at the best.
......
THE temperamental clement is the fly in the ointment to the
south. The plain truth is the average North American
doesn't undorstand the averago South American. Not under
standing each other they don't like each other. Not liking each
other it will bo extremely difficult to form any Pan-American
understanding which will WOHlv.
We don't mean no agreements will be signed; we do mean,
any agreement that will withstand any REAL strain, ride
through a REAL storm, will be unlikely. For jus', aa true as
"East is East and West is West" so it is true, Sou h is South

International agreements which won't stand severe strains

to be both noble and idealistic, is also destined to be for the

Their antl-statea' rtghu arguments
may be summed up in a simple ques

many of the great New Deal statutes

this some time ago. Would you

Answer For from 34 to 48 hours
give the Infant no other food than
scraped apple ripe, mellow, raw ap
ple, scraped or grated to pulp, and
two heaping tablespoonfulft of this
pulp or puree every three or four
hours. For thirst. Instead of water,
give the sick baby only very weak
tea. Older children or adults with
acute intestinal trouble may take
much more of the scraped apple at
a time. It Is good treatment for
acute dlarhhea in an Infant of any

A Christmas Wish
(By Clarence Allen Gasa)
I would that X had been.
A shepherd on that night.
Beheld the gleaming star,
And followed in Us flight.
And heard the holy songs.
When angels showed the way.
That would lead them to Bethlehem,
Where tiny Jesus lay.
I would that I had come.
With frankincense and myrrh,
To kneel beside the little crib.
Which Joseph fashioned there.
And with my fingers placed the gift.
Beside my Savior's bed.
And say I was a traveller that,
A shining star had led.
But since 'twas not the Master's will,
That this be so.
I shall but come to worship still,
The way I know.
