(to ONE FOR RIPLEY "Officials of the Packard Motor Car company have many stories they tell about the deliveries of new Pack ards to out of the way places of the world," said Perry Ashcraft, local Packard dealer, today as he finished the short delivery of 1939 Packard to the Medford Armory for display at the lion's club auto show. "The Llama of Tibet ordered a Packard delivered to his far away home and Packard officials thought at first It couldn't be done but they wanted to find out . If there was place where It was Impossible to take a Packard. "The car was shipped as far as possible Into Tibet, and from this farthest point, after It had been com pletely disassembled, was carried on coolie back into the forest covered mountains. r "It was set up In the Llama's throne room and every afternoon at a fixed hour, with much ceremony. He climbed into the baok seat while coolies ran the car up and down the long length of the throne room. The car could not have traveled far out of doors because of lack of roads. "More work was Involved in deliver ing three Packards than probably has accompanied the delivery of any oth er automobiles. They were shipped toy steamer to Barranqullla. There they were transferred to a smaller boat which took them up the Mag dalena river hundreds of miles. The river trip occupied a month because of the lack of speed rather than dls tance. 'They were unloaded on the bank of the river where they were com pletely disassembled. All of the parts were loaded on the backs of mules nd carried up a narrow winding molintaln trail to Bucaramanga, elty of 30,000 people which is located on the top of a mountain 9,000 feet high. "When the bodies and chassis were taken up two mules had to be used, the 'freight' being carried on two long poles suspended from saddles on the sides of the mules. At two points on the trail, turns were so sharp that the rear mule had to be swung with block and tackle off the trail and out over the deep gorge to make the turn. "When these cars were reassembled thev were In the city to stay and there are only 30 miles of road on which they can travel."
