Robert Bwln, the mad sculptor,
who says he slew three persons In
order to lmpiove his "visualization,"
was put In a padded cell In Sing
Sing prison today to begin ft sen
tence of 139 years.
Ho was bubbling over with a plan
by which he la to be released In
10 years as a "public benefactor."
With mocking laughter he ao
oepted his sentence, which admits
no chance of parole, In Judgo J. O.
WallBCii's court today, then left the
courtroom raging because the Judge
had Interrupted the prosy oration
he had planned for tlila final public
appearance. With contorted fea
tures he snarled thnt Wallace repre
sented "a rich man's JURtlce."

The Linn county grand Jury today
reopened Investigation of the reck
less driving charge against Willis
Mahoney, former mayor of Klamath
Falls and twice a Democratic nom
inee for United States senator.
The case Involves the accident a
year ago when Mahoney 'a car struck
and killed Thomas Zimmerman on
the Pacific highway near here. Ma
honey was Indicted by a previous
grand Jury but never tried. District
Attorney J. K. Weatherford, Jr., ask
ed the new Inquiry.
H. Holgcreon and Douglas Schu
macher of Bremerton, Wash., wit
nesses of the accident, were here
today and were reportedly ques
tioned by the grand Jury.

The department of agriculture today
fixed wage rates to be pild laborers
In California In production, cultiva
tion and harvesting of sugar beets
during 1939 by producers seeking
benefits under the sugar act.
The act specifies growers to be
eligible for benefits must pay "fair
and reasonable" wage scales fixed by
Secretary of Agriculture Henry A.
Wallace. The new rates are virtually
the same as those fcr 1038 except
a slight modification of the sliding
scale fixed for harvesting In south
ern California.
All bears are left-handed.
WARM SPRINGS, Ga.. Nov. 29.
(AP) President Roosevelt. It was
learned on good authority last night,
has decided to reward the efficiency
of his personal physician, Capt. Ross
T. Mclntlre, with a "Jump" promo
tion as surge: n general of the navy
with the rank of rear admiral.
The 49-year old naval surgeon, who
has guarded the president's health
since the beginning of the new deal,
will be given a double promotion
over the heads of half a dozen cap
tains who outrank him. Including
Capt. Edgar Woods, who was sup
p:se to have been his chief com
petitor for the honor.
Rear Adml. Perclval 8. Roes iter,
present surgeon general, was said to
be retiring today because of ago. An
other title for the office Is chief of
the bureau of medicine and surgery.
Dr. Mclntlre Is on the permanent
naval list as a commander, his cap
taincy being only temporary while
he was cn White House duty.
Mclntlre, a specialist in eye, ear,
ncse and throat ailments, Is a pre
maturely bald, mild-mannered man
who has made many friends In his
extensive travels with Mr. Roosevelt.
He entered the navy from Oregon,
served on Beveral hospital and train
ing ships and took over his present
post In 1933 from an assignment at j

Forty members of the Congress of
Industrial Organization's Interna
tional Miners and Smelters union
went on strike today at the new
Idrla quicksilver mine, largest pro
ducer of mercury to the western
hemisphere.
Union spokesmen said the strike
was called in protest to the discharge
late Wednesday of two members of
the CIO union.

market today without establishment
of a general resale price. Birds ar

three months.

tory." "When a driver Is convicted of
drunken driving you are to direct
the police having charge of the
prosecution to seize and Impound
the car for a period of three months
whether a magistrate makes an or
der Impounding the motor vehicle
after such a conviction or not,:
