He was returning to his Spokane post from Oakland. Calif. Cars Collide Mrs. Gust Peterson of 315 Bessie street and W. A. John tone of Berrydale were drivers of oars that collided with minor dam age yesterday at Mc Andrews road and Uorth Central avenue, a city police report today showed. Hodkins, 28, Medford, was sentenced to 10 days in Jail when he pleaded guilty to a charge of disorderly conduct in city court this morning. Milton R. Adams, 38, Talent, was fined $10 for being drunk. Robert Barrett, 37, an itiner ant, was given his choice of spending 10 days In Jail or leaving town for begging on the streets. He elected to leave town. Mayor C. C. Furnas pre aided In the absence of City Judge Allen D. Curry. Reservists Here Lieut. Thomas A Oulbertson and Lieut. 8. S. Strachan of Portland, U. S. army air corps re serve, arrived at Medford- municipal airport late yesterday- afternoon on a practice flight from Pearson field Vancouver, Wash., where they are on a fortnight of active duty. Each was piloting a North American basic training plane. The two reserve of ficers planned to return to Pearson field this afternoon. Their active tour of duty expires tomorrow. Nov. 18 (AP) Louis; Johnson, assistant secretary of war. predicted today President Roosevelt would ask congress for an army air force of upwards of 9,280 fighting planes. Johnson, a key figure in the presi- rlant'a iirlv rit nstlnnal riAfonsft needs, gave the first official outline of parts of the administration's pros pective armament program. He told a conference of New England business leaders sponsored by the New England council "our air supremacy is threat ened" by Europe's advances. "To meet the tremendous pace that the rest of the world is setting, we must, double, yes, treble and perhaps even quadruple our present air force with the best airplanes that can pos sibly be produced," Johnson said. The army's present goal of 3,320 first line planes by mid -1940 he termed "far below our immediate needs." 'Mass production of airplanes we must achieve in this country and we must do so immediately," Johnson continued. A six-month supply of weapons and supplies for an army of a million men is another outstanding admin istration objective, he Indicated. Without referring to President Roosevelt's assertion national defense Involved security of the entire west ern hemisphere, Johnson declared "right now we are weak In the sinews of battle to protect even our own shores." The an nouncement was made by C. E. Stew art, travelling engineer for the PWA from the Portland regional office. Mr. Stewart was to spend the week end here conferring with city officials on the street reconstruction program. Vie was here last Saturday to assist In tabulating bids for the contract. The city council was to hold an adjourned meeting this afternoon to award the contract provided approval had been received from the PWA regional office. The Jacksonville highway water district project provides for the in stallatlon of a pipeline system to furnish city water to the Oak Grove district.
