METHODISTS MEET WEDNESDAY NIGHT AS UNION PRELUDE Supper and Prayer Meeting Rally Planned-Merging Scheduled for June One Pastor to Serve Member of the South Methodist church will enjoy a pot-luck supper with the members of the Plnrt Meth odist church In the latter named church' gymnasium at 6:30 p. m., Wednesday. Following the aupper an old-fashioned prayer meeting rally led by Dr. Bray, will be held In the parlors. The events will mark beginning of a closer fellowship of the two churches looking to their union which will be consummated In June. Last year The Methodist Episcopal church, the Methodist Episcopal Chuch South, and the Protestant Methodist Church, with a combined total of over 8,000,000 members, vot ed for organic union and will here after be known as ' the Methodist church. The setting-up conference will be held In April In Kansas City when the details of the union will be per fected. Next June the ministers and lay delegates of the South Methodist churches In Oregon will meet with the Oregon Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal church at Forest Grove. It Is expected a new bishop, will preside over the confer enco and probably one pastor will be appointed to the Mcdford churches which will thereafter be one church Until that time the two churches will hold a united prayer meeting each week. Zt la likely other united service may be arranged. A large orowd Is expected Wednesday eve ning. AH attending should bring a covered dish and sandwiches, but do not need to bring service. NOV. 15 (AP) Secretary Wallace approved today a 1930 soil conservation program pro viding for a reduction of about 7, 800,000 acres In the total allotment for major crops. The new maximum for soil-depleting crops of participating tanners will be from 370,000.000 to 285.000.000 acres. It will be lower than this year chiefly because of a reduced wheat allotment. 1 ' Congress has allotted $712,000,000 for benefits to farmers who comply. The program, which Is voluntary, is separate from the marketing quota provisions of the crop control act. which may become mandatory under certain conditions. i The voluntary program will follow the general outline announced Aug ust lfl. At that time next year's wheat allotment waa fixed at 55,000. 000 acres, compared with a seeded acreage of 80.000,000 this year and an allotment of 02,500.000 acres. Evans, agricultural adjust ment administrator, declared the 1930 program would offer the first complete test of the crop control law because the latter measure was en acted too Irfte to affect all 1938 planting. The AAA will conduct meetings throughout the country during the next few months to explain the pro gram to farmers In. advance of the planting season. - - National allotment for each crop will be apportioned among the at a ten and divided among Individual farms. Judge Norton laat week overruled the defense de murrer. A plea of not guilty waa entered by the defendant. The Indictment grew out of an en counter between Mra. Olen Huber and her former husband. While the pair were grappling on Drape atreet, Pearl Rhoadea la alleged to have hit Mra. Huber with a stove poker. In a Juatloe court hearing. Adams, president of the American Bankers' association, de manded today the federal government reduce the deficit and begin paying the public debt. Making the annual president's ad dress, he said: "By way of self-defense and In or der to save the American system, we must organize our depositors and give them and all others who have accum ulated something an economic edu cation. This Is the only practical way I know of to resist the pressure groups and vote-buying poll 1 1 cans who are destroying and wasting the savings of our depositors and of all our citizens who have worked and saved. Must Awaken Depositors "Never should the American Bank ers' association remain silent when politicians are spending the country Into bankruptcy. We must take the battle to our depositors. We must make them realize that It Ls their fight; that ninety per cent of the assets of the country belong to them. ; "To the proposition that the worthy needy must be taken care of. the American Bankers' association is ; sincerely and wholeheartedly commit ted. But we must not forget the de- ! structlon of savings and the starva- i tlon of production mean the loaa of capacity to take care of the needy; that It la the thrifty citizens and not the government that must produce the money for thla purpose. In support of his argument, Adams quoted two presidents of the United States, Thomas Jefferson and Frank lin D. Roosevelt. Roosevelt Quoted Of Roosevelt, he said "In his message to congress on March 10, 1033, he said: 'For three lonR years the federal government has been on the road toward bank ruptcy. With the utmost seriousness I point out to the congress the pro found effect of this fact (the ac cumulated deficit of five billion dol lars) on our national economy. Zt has contributed to the recent collapse of our banking structure. It has ac centuated the stagnation of the eco nomic life of our people.' "The president," Adams said, "waa then very properly, concerned with an accumulated deficit of only five bil lions of dollars. We are now much more Justly concerned with an ever Increasing and growing deficit which, since the date of the president's con cern, has grown by fifteen billions of dollars." Later In his address, Adams quoted Jefferson "I place economy among the first and most Important virtues and pub lic debt as the greatest of dangers to be feared. To preserve our Inde pendence we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt. We must make our choice between econ omy and liberty or profusion and seryitude'.."
