Germ-men tie on the trail of greasy spoons end dirty glasses. They're packing test tubes, swabs man Jars Into little black bags and scouting District of Columbia restaurants for dlaease bugs on china and silverware. It's the first time any city has ever turned bacteriologists loose on restaurant Inspection, says the health department. Until a year ago, Washington, tike othsr cities, left the Job to Inspec tors who simply picked up a glass and looked at It to see If It wen clean. Then with Increased congressional appropriations the district health de partment hired four young men with degreea aa bacteriologists. They wore given the equipment and told to go to It. In their first sampling of 88 res taurants they found an average of 530.000 bacteria on each glass they tested. They found the trench mouth bug, pneumonia bug. and the B-coll germ, intestinal bacteria. In one year the bacteriologists hsve brought the germ count down to less thsn 800 per glass on 90 percent of the glssses they inspect and less than 300 on each silverware utensil ample margins of safety. Many of their teats show absolute sterility. When the bacteriologists run Into a high germ count In one of Wash, try; ton's 1.850 restsurents they call In the proprietor to the district health center for a class in cleanliness. They msy even invite him In for Instruc tion s second time. But third warn. Ing makes him subject to tine of 33 to 50 and the department has not yet tost a case In court. Director of Food Inspection Dr. H. R. Ashworth says the Washington Restaurant association baa given close cooperation. when hog cholera appesred In North Carolina recently 338 animals were vaccinated to get the disease under control.
