Slater Johnston In Eugene Ceremony A marriage of much Interest In Medford was solemnized In Eugene yesterday afternoon when Mrs. Lois Day became the bride at Mr. x. Bie- ter Johnston. Mrs. Johnston Is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Qulsenberry of this city. Mrs. Harold Johnson at tended the couple. Mr. and Mrs. Johnston returned to this city last evening from Eugene and today a wedding dinner will be held at Mr. Johnston's river home on the Rogue. They will reside here. The newly wedded couple are very well known In the valley where they are prominent In social activities. Mrs. Todd Hostess For Dessert Bridge Party Thursday .. Mrs. R. H. Convened Thursday Afternoon . The W.O.T.U. met In the parlor of the First M. E. church Thursday Afternoon with a very large atten dance. ' Mrs. G. A. Meeker sang the W.C.T.U. theme song, "Pure White Ribbons" accompanied by Miss Merle Dawes. Mrs. I. N. McCollum led the devo tional service, all singing "Oh, Master Xet Me Walk With Thee." , Rev. Noble Stutsman of Grants Pass who attended the state W.O.T.U. convention In Eugene told of the outstanding events of the convention. A group of matrons, holders of the W.O.T.U. gold medal for scripture contests, competed for the pearl medal. The oldest lady was 80 years of age. Desn U. O. Dubsch of Ore gon State college addressed the con tention on "Christian .Cltlaenahlp." He stressed the thought that we must be prepared to do whet Jesus would do In the given case, were He on earth today. Rev. Joseph Knotte spoke on the till regulating sale of alcoholic liquor which Is on the ballot for the coming election. Discussion on the different measures followed. Mrs. J. w. Hostesses for the event were members of the Olrls' League. The many guests called between the houra of 8 to fi o'clock and were served refreshments from a tea table appointed with autumn colors of leaves and pottery. Mrs. 0. Olen Smith and Mrs. William Bowerman presided at the tables. The following program was pre sented, piano solo by Natalie Teng wald. several readings by Barbara Prankltn, violin solo by Florence Hu bert and a vocal selection by Doro thy Oaddla. Miss Catherine Campbell, fashion Instructor at the school, pre sented an Interesting talk on "What the High achool girl should wear." Beta Sigma Phi Held Initiation Beta Sigma Phi entertained with a formal pledge dinner at the Hotel Medford Thursday evening. Yellow roses formed an attractive oenter piece for the prettily appointed table. I Following dinner a formal Initia tion was held at the home of Miss Oertrude Haaklns. Hallla En. gle, secretary of assembly, and Min nie wuiets, chaplain. Zonta Formulates Orchestra Plans The Zonta elub of Medford held Ita monthly evening meeting at the home of Mra. Effle Kurts last week. Mrs. Thora Lawrence, president, pre sided. A board meeting preceded the regular business session. The meeting was opened by sing ing various Zonta songs after which many Important Items wers discuss ed. The report from the Symphony orchestra committee was most en couraging. Thla project Is the rasjor activity of the organization and Is certainly a worthwhile undertaking. Zonta asks thst they have the hearty support of Jackson county citizens In regard to the orchestra. Following the business meeting an Interesting study was held under the lesdershlp of tho program chairman. Miss Josephine Klrtley. Internatlonel relations study wss begun by a res ume of the rsclsl elements and geo grsphlo situation of central Euro pean powers. A brief history of vari ous pre-war countries of Central Eu rope was also reviewed. Zonta club will meet next on No vember 14 for the regular luncheon session at the Hotel Medford. E. a., of Central Point, held 1U regular meet ing Tuesday evening, at which time the past worthy matrons and part worthy patrons of the chapter were honored. During the regular meeting the worthy matron, Mra. Clara Vin cent, welcomed Mrs. Nellie McOowan of Medford, past grand matron of the grand chapter of Oregon and also Mrs. Zends Sanders, worthy matron of Reames chapter No. 68 of Medford. Mrs. Lei a Shores, worthy matron of Adarel chapter No. S of Jacksonville and Dr. Lloyd Sanders, worthy patron of Reames chapter No. 06 of Medford. Under the good of the order the wor thy patron, Harold Head, took charge and all guests present spoke a few words of greeting to the members and complimented the officers for their work. After the meeting a group of the officers and members led by the worthy matron and patron entered the chapter room and built a "Fence of Love" around the past worthy ma trons and worthy patrons. Each of whom was presented with a "red rosebud of love." The unique char acterization was concluded with a candle lighting ceremony and a beautiful square march. The women all wore- formftls of white and pastel shades lending much to the beauty of this part of the program. Those talcing part were: Mrs. Clara Vincent, Harold Head, Mrs. Evelyn Skyrman. Leonard Scott, and Mesdames Beulah Faber, Margaret Swing. Gladys Jewett Marjorle Pena. Lily Holt, Edith fltlmp son, Lollts Massey, Marie Stone, Ber than Bonney, Ethel Jones, Edith Scott, Etta Purkeyplle, Stella Ander son snd Miss Roberta Pankey. The chapter rooms were especially beautiful with decorations of fall flowers and shrubs. Large baskets marked the star point stations and those of the principal officers; bowls of chrysanthemums decorated the conductresses' pedestals and the sec retary's desk. At the conclusion of the special ceremony all adjourned to the dining room, where the worthy patron again took charge and gave each past ma tron and patron en opportunity to speak. Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Norcross. first patron and second matron of the chapter, were given the honor places at the table. Mrs. Norcross re ceived and cut the beautiful birthday cake presented for the occasion by the worthy matron. The cake, bearing , 30th anniversary greetings, was dec- I orated with red rose buds and tn the heart of each was a pearl. Place cards I carried out the same rosebud snd I pearl motif, marking thirty years since the founding of Nevita chapter. White tapers in double crystal can delabra were effectively used on either side of the birthday cake In the oenter of the honor-guest table. Bowls of rose, yellow and white ohry- i santhemuma flanked with white tap ers In crystal holders were used Intermittently on the other tables. All arrangements were worked out by the worthy matron, Mrs. Clara Vincent, assisted by Mrs. Evelyn Skyr man snd Mrs. Beulah Faber. The residence was decorated In the traditional Hallowe'en motif, with ghosts and witches lending an eerie touch to darkened corners of the rooms.
