PAGE SEVEN ASHLAND TO HAVE DIAL TELEPHONES Work to Start in Near Fu ture On Change in Instru ments Medford to Han dle Distance Business ASHLAND, Oct. 29. (Spl.) Plans to Install an automatic dial tele phone exchange to replace the pres ent manual switch board In Ashland were announced Thursday by H. S. Atkins, Ashland manager for the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph company. Though no definite date hat been established tor placing the pro posed new dial central office In service. It Is understood that this will be about .May I at next year. Work will be started In the near future by local telephone Installers In changing the present manual tele phones on customers' premises to dial telephones. This work Is to be done on a gradual basis between now and the actual cut-over, and customers will continue to use their dial telephone as manual telephones until that time. The new dial central office to be placed In Ashland la known as a community automatic exchange. It wlU provide the city with a type of telephone equipment recognized as the most modern and up-to-date now available for cities the size and location of Ashland. With this new dial central office, all local calls will be dialed. Long distance. Information, and other mis cellaneous calls will be handled by direct circuits to Medford, such as calls to be made by dialing "Ope rator." - As. la customary, according to Mr. Atkins, the telephone company will provide opportunities for employment for the present Ashland operators. Sponsored by the Oregon History club, Its ad victor, Dr. Arthur S. Tay lor, a "Pioneer" exhibit has been placed there containing dresses of the pioneer period; articles In use at time. Tellcs of all sorts, neatly ar ranged for showing. Among the articles are records of the Old Normal school and a cata logue of the Tolman and Blake Nur sery published by the Oregon Sent! nel of Jacksonville. It was located on what Is now the Homes place, nnrt the catalogue is loaned by Mrs. Su sanne Homes-Carter. It mentions 50 varieties of apples. The date Is 1859. and the notation mentions Jackson county, Oregon. Ty. Irving E. Vlnlng has loaned lists of old ploys and play casts and anions' the many contributions of valuable exhibits may be mentioned Mrs. H. C. Oaley, Mrs. Eugenia Atkinson, Mrs. Alice A. Pell. Mrs. A. C. Coy, Fred Homes, Mrs, P. 8. Taylor and Glenn Simpson, Medford, Lakevlew, Ashland, Grants Pass, Kerby, Brownsboro, Marshfleld. and other communities have all con tributed toward the success of the exhibit. Old gowns will be modeled by the club members and at a tea which the club Is giving, the hostesses will wear period dresses. ' 4 DECLINE DURING WEEK PORTLAND, Oct. 28.-w;p Orders In the western pine Industry fell off nearly three million board feet to 63 835.000 In the week ending Octo ber 22. compared to the previous week, the Western Pine association said today on the basis of reports from 115 mills. Shipments were down a million feet to 67,175,000. while production was up a million to 79.000.000. All chapters of Royal Arch Masons in Oregon have been invited to par ticipate In the second annual Royal Arch reunion to be held In Portland. November 18 and 19. Chapters will send candidates to receive the most excellent master degree Friday eve ning, November 18, In the Washing ton Masonic temple. Candidates will be given the Royal Arch degree In the West Side Masonic temple the follow ing evening. A banquet at 5:80 p. m., will pre cede the degree work, with the can didates as guests of honor. Chapters are expected to confer Mark Master and Past Master degrees on their own candidates previous to the reunion, but candidates who have been unable to receive these degrees may join a class for special com munications. "Little Women" by the Associated Players. 4 The play was presented before a capacity audience and was extremely well received, though it was not quite up to the usual high standard of excellence that has been estab lished by Angus L. Bowmer, director. The set and costuming, done by Lois Bowmer, added to the young designer's reputation for quality and authentic creations. Jeanette Fields as Marmee and Janet Young as Jo turned In credit able performances. John Barker as Professor Bhaer was best among the male performers. The play will be repeated Tuesday evening for the general public.
