Oct. 31. (AP) New and further reaching ac tions were hinted today to be Im pending In the wake of federal grand Jury Indictments returned here late yesterday against 73 persons charged with making political capital of the New Mexico WPA. Dozens prominent In atate politics and government were Indicted on charges of conspiracy to defraud the government for political purposes, among them Assistant- U. S. Dlst. Atty. Stanley W. P. Miller, aon-ln-law of Sen. Dennis Chavez; two Democratic county chairmen; Mrs. Anita Tafoyn, senator Chavez" sister; Mrs. J. A. Werner, wife of the Albu querque postmaster; and former state WPA Administrator Fred Kealy. Continue Probe Agents of the WPA division of In vestigation under Special Agent C. E. Oor'anson, who have worked a month with the grand Jury, were still on the Investigation. The grand Jury action, which con eluded a month of carefully veiled Inquiry, fell like a bombshell In New Mexico's heated political am. pslgn. Federal Judge Colin Neblett, who demanded the probe September 7 with Instructions to spare no one, ordered the defendants brought be fore him next Tuesday and directed they post tlOOO bond each. He ordered the Jurors held subject to the call of the court after commend ing them as "good American citi zens" That additional action may follow was also seen In Judge Nebletts re fusal to adjourn the grand Jury m view of possible future "findings" by "federal agenclea." Severe Condemnation The grand Jury report bristled with condemnation. "The extent to which the avowed ends and aims ofthe works progress administration program have been Impaired and defeated through sel fish alms and ambitions of Indi viduals entrusted with Its adminis tration or who sought political ad vantage, has amazed your grand Jury." the report said. The Jury declared that "many of those In positions of honor and trust have failed in creating and main taining respect for themselves and the government which they are under oath to represent.- E PARIS. Oct. 31. (AP) The Count of Paris, son of the Duke of Guise, pretender to the French throne, flew to the vicinity of Paris today in de fiance of the law and issued a manifesto calling upon Prance to restore the monarchy for "her salva tion. Poon after handing the manifesto o newspapermen, who met him at a farmhouse near Paris, the count took off for Belgium where he lives In exile with his father. It waa the first time the SO-year-old count, who was born In Belgium, had set foot on the soil of the land his ancestors ruled. Under the law he la punishable by long Imprisonment for his act. Operatives of the surete national long have been detailed to watch him and his father, even in Bel glum, and his success In landing safely in France caused great ex citement. TAX INCREASE PLANS STUDIED TO PAY FOR WASHINGTON, Oct 31. OP) Congressional tax experts are study ing several proposals for Increasing Income taxes to finance an expanded armament program. These experts staff members of the joint committee on Internal rev enue will make recommendations for tax legislation at the next session of congress. Informed persons said an emerg ency 10 per cent increase In Income taxes was one method under con sideration. The Increase would apply to both Individual and corporate In comes. On the basis of this year's revenue estimates. It would wield an additional 200.ooo,ooo. The authorities said the additional levy would be lmp:sed for only a year or two, and would expire automatic ally at the end of the designated period. Great Britain, with sharply mount ing rearmament costs, already has adopted a similar emergency levy. Chairman Walsh (D.-Masa.) of the senate naval affairs committee said he believed congress should have a complete picture of Joint army and navy air defense needs before It acts on the separate war and navy bud gets. He suggested the two services Join in a report to congress. REESE CREEK SCHOOL The Reese Creek school has In stalled WPA sanitary toilets, as ap proved by the Oregon state board of health, bringing to 10 the number of units installed In the county the past month. ( - These sanitary privies are installed by the WPA at no labor cost to the Individual, those wishing to replace old-type toilets with the new ones being forced 'to pay only the cost of the material. (AP) Three of a group of WPA workers who balked yesterday because they had to use both nick and shovel on a Bronx project have been fired for Insubordi nation. WPA headquarters said today. Out of 67 men employed en the project M were back at work, and the fifty-fourth man waa trying to persuade officials to reinstate the ones who were discharged. The workers objected to use of both tools, arguing one man ought to use a pick while .another used the shovel. " Use Mall Tribune Vvunt Ads. ' Mr. Reum died In his home at 923 South Oakdale avenue of a heart attack early Thursday morning after a long Illness. He was 64 years old. Although an unassuming man. Mr. Reum was prominently known In Jackson county. Quiet, he waa yet extremely soclsble and all who came in contact with' him admired and respected him for his sterling qusll tles. He liked to have companions about blm and those who knew him best describe blm as a genuine gen tleman and a true friend Mr. Reum waa credited with show ing the commercial possibilities of producing gladiolus bulbs on a prof ltable scale In Jackson county. He began the growing of bulbs here as an avocation, a sort of hobby, but his interests grew until he was pro ducing bulbs on a large commercial scale. He waa bom In Decorah, Iowa, on November 31, 1814. He spent his early life and procured his formal educa tion in Iowa. Mr. Reum waa united In marriage to Miss Sarah Montgomery In De corah on January 18, 1907. The cou pie moved to Canada In 1909 and came from Canada to Medford In 1931. He wsa a member of the Masonic, Elks and Odd Fellows organizations Survlvora are hla wife and two sons. Sporadic sniping continued In Je rusalem last night, aftid troops still surrounded the mosque of Omar, whore many Arabs were believed to be entrenched. Welfare workers handed out food to hungry residents of the old city, still suffering from a provision short age. Shops were closed.
