In 1887. The family moved In a few montha to Columbus Junction, Iowa. He financed his education at Mon mouth, 111., college by teaching and writing for newspapers. Through hta Job as correspondent, Sprague formed associations which led him to a pub lisher's career years later. At 33, Sprague went to Waltsburg. Wash., as school superintendent and In three years waa appointed sup erintendent of public Instruction for the state of Washington at Olympla. A hankering for newspaper work per suaded htm to purchAM the Jourmtl fcWmes, a weekly, at RKzvllle, Wash.. In 1916. He pierced a larger newspaper field In 1031, buying an Interest in the Oorvallls Gazette -Times, He sold hta hare at a substantial profit In 1020 and bouRht a two-third interest In the Salem Statesman where be Is publisher. Sprague has maintained a deep nd actlTa devotion to community and educational problems. He Is trustee for both Willamette univer sity and Albany college. He has been a steadying Influence In Republican politics for many years and In 1034 waa keynoter at the State Republi can club convention. He has two children, a daughter who Is a bacteriologist at Sun Jose, Cel., and a son who la a student at Oberlln. Sprague believes In a atable and orderly government. He believes, too. the people want their highway de partment, state police department, liquor commission and all other state departments free from political spoils Abuses; that the state should have the benefit of the training and experience of competent employes. ' The candidate regards the existing liquor laws satisfactory without Im portant change. He assorts the WPA and state relief programs necessary until men now benefiting by such agencies have been re-employed In private enterprises at good wages.
