Although acetylaallcyllc acid Is, In my opinion, the least objec tionable or least dangerous of all pain-killers, atlll It la well to remem ber that even a dose or two of as pirin may produce serious or alarm ing untoward effects In certain In dividuals. For Instance, the U. a. Pharmacopoeia says two dosea of five grains each caused marked heart weakness, pulse rate of 136, edemat ous swelling of face arid mucous mem branes; In another Instance a single dose of five grains of aspirin caused alarming edema or swelling of the face and throat. So the layman must beware of resorting to aspirin when the risk of untoward effect Is not Justified by the severity of ache or pain crying for relief. In any circumstance, if ten grains of aspirin falls to give any relief to the ache or pain, It U unwise to take a large dose. A single dose or only five grains should be tried at first, and if this affords no relief, a second dose of ten grains may be taken after two hours, not sooner. The less as pirin In any case the better. For a child the doso should be according: to weight If the child weighs one half as much as an adult (average adult weight 100 pounds), the dose of aspirin for the child should be 3 '4 to 0 grains. It la my belief that aspirin la not a cure or even a remedy for any ailment or disease In a specific aense It Is merc-ly a pain-killer. At that. It Is justifiably used as a paln-klller only when proper medical advice or treatment Is not available.
