l.fETTFOTJT) MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON. TTTESTVAT. OCTOBER 11. 1938. PAGE FIVE TEXTILE WORKERS BULGARIAN MAJOR URGE WAGE-HOUR AT WASHINGTON, Oct. 11. f AP) A labor representative on the wage hour committee for the textile In dustry said today he would ask 4-cent minimum, hourly wage for textile workers for the tint year's ' operation of the wage and hours law. . Emll Rleve. president of the Ameri can Federation of Hoalery Workers, disclosed his Intention to make that demand as the textile wage-hour group aat down for Its first discus sion of- minimum pay levels in the Industry. The committee, first chosen under the new wage-hour law, must recom mend to Elmer F. Andrews, wage - hour administrator, the highest min ' lmum wage It believes the textile ' Industry can pay without causing a substantial curtailment In employ ment. The law. effective October 24, pre scribes a minimum wage of 35 cents an hour and a maximum 44-hour work week in Industries In Inter state commerce. It provides ma chinery, however, for establishing higher wage levels if representatives of an Industry. Its workers and the public agree. While the committee prepared for Its Initial conference, Andrews said at a press conference, lack of funds probably would make It necessary for the federal government to rely upon state labor departments to help en force the law.
