OPEN GUN PROBE
TJKIAH. Calif., Oct. 10. (AP)
Sheriff E. L. Williams and Mendo
cino state hospital authorities today
hunted for the source of two guns
which two escaped criminally Insane
' convicts had when recaptured Sat
urday night.
One of the two guns, missed In
a sesrch by guards, was used yester
day by the pair In a second desperate
attempt to escape.
Leo Rod on 1, officials reported,
pulled a pistol out of his clothing
when marched to his cell. He wss
disarmed, they said, but not until
he and Alvln Osten "put up plenty
of resistance."
The two escaped Friday night after
opening seven doors on their way to
freedom with a makeshift passkey.
They were captured Saturday night
without resistance by two guards
less than ten miles away from the
Institution. They had outfitted them
. selves In the brief time they were
' gone with complete changes of cloth
ing. Including overcoats, canned food
aupply and had obtained a shotgun,
besides the pistol.
16 DIE IN CRASH
OF BEIGE PLANE
BERLIN, Oct. 10. (AP) Sixteen
passengers, all Germans, and a Bel
gian crew of four were killed today
when a Belgian airliner crashed near
Soest, In the Ruhr vslley In north'
western Germany.
An eye witness said the plane lost
a wing In midair. It was an Italian
made Savola, type S83. It was flying
through rain and fog which covered
western Germany this afternoon.
The passengera were said to have
fallen or Jumped from the plane be
fore It crashed In flamea. The liner
. was on Its regular Brussels-Essen-Berlln
run.
Sir Harry Twyford, lord mayor of
London and British legion officials
hsd traveled from London to Brussels
on the mschlne, but chsnged there
to another plane bound for Prague.
The lord mayor Is In charge of a
British relief mission for ceecho
slovak refugees.

A dozen A PL warehousemen retired
today after their first overt conflict
with CIO warehousemen, who turnea
out 200 picket to prevent the APL
group from manning a new liquor
distributing depot.
The CIO union claimed It had
blocked, for the time being at least,
an effort of liquor distributors to
open an "unfair" warehouse and
break the tie-up In liquor distribu
tion caused by the shutdown of 130
plants In a dispute with the CIO
union.
Thomas 0. Whit, secretary of the
A PL union, said his men were "In
timidated by a young army of CIO
men," and went home.
"I don't believe the employers will
try to open up now," he said. "The

White said the eight liquor whole
salers backing the new depot were

Hoffman of Portland submitted a low
bid of 9126.317 today for the con
struction of a heating plant at the
state capltol In Salem.

public works administration consid
ered restoration of a 179,760 allot
ment for enlargement of the coast

PRAOUI, Oct. 10. (AP) The
Czechoslovak government announced
today German troops had penetrated
beyond the new Czechoslovak-German
frontier In six Instances and
reported several disorders in connec
tion with German occupation.
Three Czechoslovak state police
and several members of the Sudeten
German free corps were said to have
been wounded In a machine-gun bat
tle on an Elbe river bridge near Aus
slg. The Czechoslovaks captured a
machine-gun and freed a police in
spector who had been taken pris
oner. " One Czechoslovak soldier was re
ported, injured near Kdyne by free
corps troopers who kicked and beat
him.
Several members of a .state police
detachment were said to have been
wounded in a fight at Mikulov Sun
day with Oerman storm troop and
elite guard formations.

spokesman for the United Automo
bile workers at Flint, said today

H. E. Riggs, president of the Ameri
can Society of Civil Engineers, the

funds on the Grand Coulee irrigation
project and other building Jobs "as
useless as the pyramids," Secretary of
Interior Ickes said:
"I most certainly do not agree with
Mr, Rlggs. I don't suppose he knows
more than all the engineers who
worked and cooperated with us on
the Grand Coulee dam.
"When this project is completed It
will virtually open up a new empire
