I Betty Reich of Medford and Marvin P:yer of Ashland, winners of the Jackson county division of the 4-H Club achievement and leadership con test, are In Portland this week with 73 other outstanding 4-H members aa guests of the First National Bank of Portland during the Pacific Inter national Exposition on Wednesday. Thursday and Friday. The two arrived in Portland In time fOT the opening of tne three-day pro gram with a luncheon at the head quarters hotel, followed by a visit of the entire group to the Pacific Inter national Livestock Exposition grounds. Dinner that evening was served at Henry Tnlele's English Tav ern on the Exposition grounds, and the first day ended with the group attending the Horse Shew and famous McCarty-EUlott Indoor Rodeo. Thursday's program encompasses a tour of the head office of the First National Bank of Portland, a visit to the famous Sanctuary of Our Sorrow ful Mother, a special luncheon at the Coon Chicken Inn and a tour through the Jantzen Knitting Mills. Thurs day evening the bank will be host to the entire group and other honor ed guesta at a banquet which will be followed by an informnl dance In the Oeorglan Room of the Heathman ho tel. On Friday the guesta visit the Swan Island airport, and later, again go to the Pacific International Livestock Exposition grounds. A special lunch eon Is to be held Friday noon at the Columbla-Edgewnter Country Club, on the banks of the Columbia river, following which the club members will start on their return trips home. The floors of a large Portland hotel were reserved for the party, whtvv headquarters were established on the mezzanine floor. Betty Lie Reich, daughter of Fred Reich, Is In the eighth grade of Oak Grove school and has been In 4-H Club work for four years. In 1P37. 1038, and for 1039 she was the re cipient of scholarships to summer school and has won several prizes at the county fair. Marvin Poyer; son of E. B. Poyer, Is a Junior at Ashland high school. He haa been In 4-H work ntne years, has won a scholarship for summer school and has received sev eral prizes at the county fair. Chinese said they defeated Japanese attempting to push through the Tapteh mountains on the north bank of the Yangtze, northwest of Hnnkow. A Japanese oommuntque said In vading planes bombed Uang&han. In eastern Srechwan province, and de stroyed nine grounded Chinese planes, afterwards engaging in an air battle with 20 Chinese planes, seven of which were shot down. In near-by Chungking, the state ment said, three Chinese planes end two hangars were destroyed.
